I am looking for best back up software for backing up our field laptops. I will be issuing external hard drives to the employee's. I am not looking for a cloud service and not really worried about price as long as it's less than $100 per PC.
These laptops are dual purpose personal/business. Last week on one of our new construction jobs while we were programming our camera system the roof spring a leak and water came running down on one of our laptops. Fortunately there was no damage to Hdrive and we were able to find a mobo with same chip set so we didn't lose anything, but don't want to take that risk again.
Thanks for your help in advance...damn edit won't let me fix Title :Best

Acronis True Image has been a life saver for me. Very easy to use.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I have reviewed the "Best of" links but those are sometimes teetered advertisement. Acronis is in the top 3 list, just wanted additional reinforcement of choices from my real world buddies here at Polk

Check out Image for Windows from Terabyte Unlimited. We do our regular backups with it -- it has saved us more than once. Just replaced hard drive in wife's laptop with its help a couple weeks ago...

Ron,
If your looking for imaging software, Acronis True Image is really good. Most of the plants IT departments, that I travel too, are using, it. I have used in the past and also recommended it to friends. I haven't tried their Backup and Recovery software.
I just bought NovaBackup a week ago but haven't had a chance to get to play with it yet. Here's a link to add for your research.
http://www.novastor.com/en/software/windows-backup
I bought it because it looked like it would be pretty easy to use, included imaging, and had encryption
Wish I could give you more details, but I'm a couple weeks away from spending some time with it.

Scott Novastor was the other I was looking at using. I have used Acronis for ghosting but was looking at back-up/incremental back-up solution.
Whenevr you get around to it and test Novastor please let me know what you think.
Thanks for replying...we gonna see you at LSAF?

Why not a cloud service? We use Autonomy and it just works quietly in the background with no interaction by me. This is what we use at work (GE) and I think it is about 3.50 a month and it is always up to date.Home Theater

Ron,
I'm in the process of switching laptops (a process I hate). Once the laptop is set up, I'll give it a whirl. I should have some time the first part of April to get that done and set up the NAS.
Right now I'm planning on being at the LSAF at least for a day. I'm going out to the coast of North Carolina the weekend before, so I should be around that weekend.
I'll keep you posted on both fronts,

Everything is going cloud, even Amazon and Norton have free cloud storage. Unless they just backed up onto sticks or discs mechanically once per day, or carried the hard drive back up around, cloud is the only way. Software won't do it really, you seem to be looking for space that will be mechanical or in the cloud. Me, I am still mechanical, and have back ups for my back ups for those back ups.Onkyo TX-NR636

I've seen Acronis used as well for critical computers. Very versatile, affordable, and forgiving if you need to restore to dissimilar hardware. For incrementals (and it is cloud storage) I've used Carbonite which I think is a very good product.
If you keep a local backup on an external hard drive for example, you risk it being damaged, lost, stolen. Maybe not likely for the laptop to go bad and the backup drive to be stolen - at the exact same time - but part of the pros/ cons for local or cloud backup.Polk Monitor 10

Sorry ... still haven't installed it yet. Work has been way too damn busy
I will get to it, just May isn't shaping up much better. So much to do and so little time.
