Watts - How many do you run with?

Hello fellow Club Polk members. This poll is to gauge what the "average" amount of watts used by members. I know that watts aren't directly proportionate with the end result as to what hits your ears but I thought it would be a fun thread. Throughout my audio journey, I have personally ran with rigs that ranged from 8 watts to well over 2800 watts. Those who have been there and done that, please do not hesitate to chime in and tell folks who may be interested what you have tried in your own audio journey.

Let's have some fun with this one.

My power amp is somewhere north of 200, but not 400. High current delivery though.

I can't figure out how to edit the poll. The one marked as 100- watts or less, I fat fingered. It should read 1000 watts or less. My apologies.

I currently have from 30wpc available in tube form to 750wpc in solid state...
Funny part is, I prefer the 30wpc tube power with my largest speakers.

    Singled ended Class A

    30wpc @ 8
    40wpc @ 4

Never ever had a need a for more, people always think I'm lying when I say it's 30/40wpc.

Yeah I don't notice any of that with my 120wpc but I am always a little reserved to turn it up too loud. I think the extra power would benefit me greatly though, my room is 22+24 and fairly anechoic. I do intend to upgrade, at some point to the ATI AT 2002 or 3002. If just for piece of mind.

When I had a 2 channel system I had a 50wpc Rotel. Switched over to a 110wpc Denon 3802 receiver couldn't hear a difference. Joined here in 2004, shortly thereafter got a Parasound 1500A @ 205wpc and heard what lots of power can do for a system. My then 14 year old RTA-8T's proceeded to show me what they can do!!! From that moment on I made up my mind to NEVER let another receiver alone drive my speakers or to ever have less than 200wpc driving any of my speakers.

I think in 2006 I upgraded again to my Sunfire 405wpc 5 channel amp so that I could amp all of my speakers, and once again my Fxi-3 speakers showed me what they can do when powered properly.

I approach this hobby far differently from most of you guys. I'm not interested in constantly switching out gear looking for supposed audio nirvana, just to start buying something else to find it all over again. I want to set it, forget it, and enjoy it like I am right now.

Now that being said, Mark has gifted me with a new 5 shelf audio rack, I'll take pics once I get it, put it together and move my gear to it.

Currently 500WPC @ 4 Ohm of Class A weighted SS power but stable to 4kWpc into 0.5 ohm.

I've had stereo and mono block tube amps from 60WPC to 150WPC, from high to extremely low distortion (I've had some tube gear spectrum analyzed). I've owned SS amps from 50WPC, Class A, A/B and loaned some Class D monos. I've owned conventional speakers, SDA's included, ribbon and ESL (electrostatic) speakers.

+1 to what Erik posted. My current speakers are 4 Ohm. My amp has plenty of reserve power/current for no strain transients from low to high volume. I've learned that powering speakers properly actually improves low level listening. Some whom haven't heard this all SS system think it should sound cold and sterile, without emotion........makes me snicker. Nope, not at all.

Marantz MM7025 = 140wpc x 2 for my RTIA9. Marantz MM7055 = 140wpc x 5, but in reality somewhat less because it is rated with 2 channels driven. That is for my surrounds and center.

I have a 100WPC BAT VK-200. Sounds better than the 200WPC Aragon 8008bb and the 30WPC Pass Aleph 30 and my AMC 70WPC hybrid tube amp that I have used more recently. Unfortunately, it is out of commission because a bidge rectifier "fried" I am recapping it with better caps and will hopefully have it up by next thursday. We'll see......
