Proton D1200 intermittent channel dropping off.

Hi,

I have a proton D1200 power amp which sounds beautiful. It has an issue as of late and seems to be a little worse since I bought my new preamp. Previously I was using my Kyocera r-611 receiver as a preamp through the pre-out. The left channel and occasionally the right will drop out intermittently every couple of hours. It seems to do it more when I am running the amp at very low volumes and also it seems to happen with different sources. It rarely happens when I use the cd player, but more often with the tuner. It is remedied quickly by boosting the volume quickly up and down. This brings the channel back and I am good to go for a few more hours...volume definitely affects it as higher volumes equal less intermittent. This sounds like a bad relay does it not? If it is, I have the proton relay part number but there is no way that Proton is going to still have this in stock. They are limited to televisions at this time and seem to not be in the hifi biz anymore. Would I be able to find a replacement relay for the proton? This amplifier is amazing and I want to keep it forever.

Thanks

Scott

    Hello Dave,
Welcome to Polk's forum. Probably the first thing to do is make sure the problem is with the amplifier. Try reversing the cables that go from the preamp to the power amp at the amp, if possible. Then see if the problem remains in the same channel or changes channels.
    Regards, Ken

Wiggle each RCA connector and see if that causes the dropouts. Try wiggling the volume control to cause a dropout.

Finally try light tapping on the equipment.

Thanks for the replies. The interconnects are hooked up correctly. Once the channel drops off either wiggling the colume or tapping the amp brings the signal back.....

Decent chance it's a speaker relay. They can be cleaned with dry abrasive if you're handy, or can be replaced if you're comfortable taking a soldering iron.
