Insulating SRS's

Is there a thread on properly insulating the SRS's? I was just looking at a thread about polyfilling the 1c's. One of the posts mentions there should be no insulation behind the passive radiator. How about behind the mids? Is it the same for the SRS's?

The polyfil should be no lower than the lowest MW's, definitely not behind the PR. That will kill the bass. One of the proven tweaks here with SDA models, and really any Polks with a PR, is to install strips of Black Hole 5 behind the MW's. It cleans up mid range congestion and provides greater clarity. Also, improves the bass. You would use the Black Hole with the polyfil, not in place of.

Thanks for the replies, gents. That's extremely interesting. Every speaker I've taken apart(non-Polk), has all sides covered, no exposed wood.

Don't forget to wrap the backs of the midwoofers in heat tape. That will ensure a seemless insulation integration from top to bottom!

Heat tape? First I've heard of that. What exactly does "Heat Tape" do?

I was being a smart @ss, sorry. Heat tape keeps pipes from freezing. The title of this thread about insulating SRS made me think of it. Sorry for the confusion! lol

Only a "smart @ss" from Georgia jokes about heat tape and frozen pipes in the midst of the kind of winter we have had in the great Northeast! :-)

All I can say is that I moved out here from Palo Alto, CA, because I missed having four "honest-to-God" seasons.

Now, I've had enough snow, ice and sub-freezing temperature to last me the rest of my life!

Actually, it's a lot of fun -- err, maybe a little too much fun. Just like I maybe have a little too much maturity! :-)

We had our January thaw, so it's back to normal now, but jeeze over two weeks of sub-zero in the am, and it never got above 12 during mid day. That was brutal.

Yes there were. Then hot. Then cold. This week looks like mid 70's. I'll take that all year. I do miss the autumn in D.C., and, yes, even the snow.

I realized you were being a smart A$$ when i read it but it actually gave me an idea. A good bit of distrtion comes from the acoustic waves first reflections inside the speaker system just as it does out in the listening environment. In earlier days we looked for ways to fill in the area beghind the cone between the frame and the magnet. The front surface of the magnet assembly is the first reflection in many cases. This then bounces back to the rear of the cone causing phase issues with the sound at the cones front and back surfaces. I never considered tape because it is just too flimsey and would compress under pressure. But thats the mental image i got when reading your comment. And aalso after justy reading about the Black Hole again. Then it hit me; what about shaping some Black hole to just fit this area on the front of the top plate of the magnet assembly. Not much at all, just enough to smoothly fill the wedge area between the frame and the magnet top plate. This would be much easier than other things that can be done to fill this area. Not sure exactly how much this would help on these driver due to the width of the frame spokes also being a similar trouble spot on these drivers. A very thin layer of sound absorbing material on the backs of the spokes may be helpful but could also cause interference issues if not thin enough and then may be too thin to be effective.
