Break In

Yesterday I got a call from my sister, who lives a few houses down from me. She was pulling out of her driveway around 1240 pm and saw an unfamiliar car in my driveway. She and her husband (both retired cops) did a drive by and saw that the lower right panel of the front door had been kicked in. They called 911, and turned around. The driver must have called those inside the house because they came flying out, jumped in their car and sped off through the neighborhood. The chase was on. Our house is about a mile into the neighborhood from the main road so it takes a bit to get out of it.

My people were trying to get close enough to get a license plate number. They hit speeds up to 60 mph. Once they hit the main road, the assh*les got just around a bend out of site, and they lost them. I get a call from work just after all this from my sister so I head home. While I'm enroute the first sheriff's deputy shows up and they all enter the house. These f**kers were after gold jewelry. They got some very sentimental pieces my wife has had for 30+ years, irreplaceable antiques. The audio equipment, digital camera and other valuables were not touched.

Sis calls back while I'm still enroute and says they found a car, wrecked, matching the description. As I'm getting close to the turn into our neighborhood I come across 8-10 sheriff's cars, all with blue lights flashing and cops everywhere. And there in someone's front yard by the roadside sits the car, all doors open with a search underway. They caught the driver, a young woman who had her infant with her, but the other three in the car escaped.

I'm so angry I don't have the words. Insurance company adjuster to come tomorrow to inspect the door. Planning to get an insulated steel door, but open to other ideas.

Guns cleaned, other preparations underway. Open to any suggestions here.

Update: the driver was arrested and the infant collected by social services. She identified one of the perps; arrest warrants out for him, still working on the others.

That really sucks. It's just stuff man, as long as your family is ok that's what matters. Curious as to why they singled out your home. Maybe these are people you know, or the wife knows/works with ? How else would they know you have jewelry ?

Your right, Tony. It's just stuff. Family fine, dogs OK. The big dogs were outside and probably raising hell when they pulled into the driveway. Our Jack Russell was inside, hiding. Not sure what they did to her, but she was shaking when we got home and had to hold her for a while. No kids in the house.

My sister and her husband deserve a medal. These guys crashed because they were chasing them. We speculate that they were discovered after they had only been in the house for a short time. The cops seem to be very quick on the scene - I'm guessing it's a pleasure to get called when one is in progress rather than after the fact. I've had lots of good communication with them today.

We're hopeful, but realistic, about getting things back. The sentimental attachment was very strong, tears shed by my wife today.

Thanks for all the kind words

Man I hate to hear that ****. Have you considered getting a dog, even if not a large one. Most thieves prefer houses without a canine of any size.

I am very sorry to hear this Fred. I am glad that one of them was caught and will likely lead to at least a second theif being caught. I am also glad that you, your wife and none of your dogs were physically hurt. People seem to be doing this $hit, and horrible $hit in general (i.e. blindsidingly hitting people, groping, etc.etc.) more and more. It really is getting worse. If you don't have one, it's time to get a CCW license (don't know the laws in Illinois though).

I pray you and your wife gets her jewelry back.

I know someone that this happened to only a week ago. Broke a window stole cash and jewelry. With the window broken a pipe froze sending water all over the dining room.

But as others have stated Thank God that you and your wife were not hurt.

Sorry to hear about all of this. Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens every single day here in Houston, but since the authorities did catch one of the perps in the wrecked vehicle, usually they will give up someone. It doesn't take long for that someone togive up the other ones involved who were part of , or the mastermind of the crime or crimes. Believe me, it doesn't take long before charges can get stacked (like if the vehicle they used in the crime was stolen) and depending on the value of items stolen, damage to house etc...well, you get the idea. Hope you get everything back , glad no one was hurt.

    Drum,
Sorry to read the bad news and wish you the best of luck. That truly sucks and I hope things work out for you and your family. I'll bet the scum sucking low life piles of crap will be arrested real soon if they are not in custody already. Like others, I bet they have a lengthy criminal record. A .22 short to the side of the head works wonders. Yeah yeah I don't think they should automatically executed, unless they touched your stereo equipment of course, but I get really aggravated when I read stuff like this.

Remember the guy who used a shot gun to fix the two criminals who robbed his neighbors home down in Texas?? His hit ratio was 100% I do believe since both guys died from gunshot wounds. We do not have to worry about them being repeat offenders anymore.
If I remember correctly they were both shot in the back, cool!!

It's getting bad. I have a home office upstairs and can see out the window form my desk.
I see a teen across the street looking in a car window, then I see one walk from between my
house and the neighbor's. They both start ransacking that neighbors SUV. At 1 pm in the afternoon!
I dashed outside in my bear feet and the race is on. If I'd had my shoes on- they would of been in trouble.
Sad that they had to work to keep ahead of a guy in his mid 50's.

The best thing I can recommend is to build a photo library of everything you own. It's mighty hard to remember all the stuff you have when something like this happens---it will also come in handy in case of a natural disaster type thing. Re-look your policy, make sure you have the coverage you think you have, and deductibles you're satisfied with. After our brush with that big storm last June, I went around and photographed everything we own.

My biggest fear is a break-in while we're home. I'd much rather NOT have to shoot someone, and go through that whole ordeal; but thankfully Arizona is a "Castle Doctrine" and "Stand your ground" state.

This. Especially in the case of natural disasters or fire. I went around my house a while back with my phone and videoed everything, including closets, drawers, everything.

If you lost EVERYTHING, would you know what you had? How many pairs of jeans, or shirts, medicine's you had...etc. It's on my hard drive, a hard drive at my brothers house (we duplicate all of our files, like pictures and things, on to each other's hard drives just in case) and I uploaded to a cloud drive.

    Hope they find them.

Ya know, I never used to either until recently. Never locked a door....then when I did....I locked myself out.LOL

When economic times gets harder, people do desperate things, so I decided to start locking doors. Started asking neighbors to keep an eye on the joint if I'm gone the whole day. You just never know anymore.

I don't see economic times getting easier in the near future, but I also would hate to have to turn the home into the Fortress of solitude. Maybe a moat around the house filled with Piranha would do the trick. Could easily keep them fed from solicitors and Jehovah Witness's making the rounds.
