Just an FYI- When I was looking into a JD100 CDP for a demo rig, which is now discontinued, recommendations were made to use Marantz CD5004 as a transport into the Jolida FX Tube DAC as an alternative. There are positive reviews on this combo and Russ and I will be using this combo at LSAF
    2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures
Desktop rig: LSi7, Polk 110sub, Dayens Ampino amp, W4S DAC/pre, Sonos, JRiver
Gear on standby: Melody 101 tube pre, Unison Research Simply Italy Integrated
Gone to new homes: (Matt Polk's)Threshold Stasis SA12e monoblocks, Pass XA30.5 amp, Usher MD2 speakers, Dynaudio C4 platinum speakers, Modwright LS100 (voltz), Simaudio 780D DAC

Seems to have good reviews. I'd rather have a CDP than a DAC/computer set up.

If you are not playing SACDs then I would go with a music server DAC. Nor would I use a typical PC for a music server. For example, I use the Bryston BDP1 file player, which has been optimized solely for accurate file playback.

The benefit of the music server over a CD player is tremendous.

    1. There is very low read jitter reading a file from a hard drive versus reading from a spinning plastic disc.
    2. Depending on the hard drive size you can have instant access to 1000s of CDs.
    3. You can instantly select any CD, or song, to play via a remote.
    4. You can organize various playlists of CDs, or songs, and switch between them.
    5. As DACs improve, you can upgrade your DAC for a performance increase.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

Speaking of jitter, anything below 150 ps is inaudible and all but the cheapest CDP's these days will meet or exceed that.

I do both! I have a cayin scd-50t for sacd and redbook goes from the coax out to a w4s dac2. I also have a laptop running jriver and flac for digital. I have some chesky 196k that sounds better then sacd! Too many options. Do you have a lot of cd's or sacd? If not, what's your current player? If its decent as a transport, just get a dac and you can have the best of both worlds.

Or get a esoteric k3 and have he best of both worlds.. yep that one is on my radar. Just need $ lol.

Depends how many CDs you have. Between my wife and myself, we have a few thousand, so there will ALWAYS be a CD/SACD player in the house. As convenient as FLAK is to play back, I still prefer to look through CDs and pick one out, put it in the player and sit back.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

i think it's the urge to buy something new. i already have a dac and have been transferring some cds to hard drive using flac/media monkey. my current cdp is the discontinued virtue audio piano m1 that i am using without the dac, a grant fidelity tubedac-11.

You have a solid player. Have you rolled the tubes on the tube dac11? If you run the cdp into the tube dac you probably will get close to the same sound as the cayin. Or at least it would give you an idea of how the cayin would sound.

the tubedac-11 still has the stock tube in it , I did purchased a genalex reissue 6922 but have been too lazy to roll it in as the dac is not in primary use.

I if you do get the cayin the 6922 stock tubes I didn't like. My 50t came with eh tubes. I rolled some mulard early 60's Great Brittian made with good resulrs I also tried Siemens gold pin with good results. I did not like the eh. The highs were raspy and the bass was just about completely gone!. Btw. Both are great looking units. So I take it your not into sacd?

Btw in my opinion, for the $ a rolled tubedac 11 is darn good sounding unit as well as the ability to use it as a tube beffer.

my last experiment with sacd was the philips sacd 1000, google it and you will see why.
have to think, 6922/6dj8 are some of the most expensive signal tubes to roll.

just saw this one and i have lots of 12au7's.

also thought about this one as it is less expensive and has a usb input.

If you find you're too lazy to mess around with tube rolling, you might want to steer clear of an expensive CD player. I have a CD player that I think sounds amazing, yet now that I can use a computer to play songs I'm too lazy to play CDs. I'm even considering selling the CD player. Seems everything is moving towards quality audio with a computer as the source. I haven't played a vinyl record in months either. Of course trends and attitudes change over time, so I'm hesitant to abandon my other sources.

Be it cd's or digital files, the one common denominator is the dac. My advice.....keep your cdp and invest in a Cary 100t tube dac. Will bring both your cd's and digital world to new levels.

it's not that i am too lazy to tube roll it's that the dac is not used a lot in my systems. i have a tube pre and power amps that roll, roll, roll baby.

With my current system: Sonos music server > Empirical Audio Syncromesh > CAL Alpha tube DAC, a CD player is the furthest thing from my mind. I never thought I'd take this route but I wouldn't give it up now for all the CD players in the world. Of course everyone's mileage will vary & I'm sure for some a CD player is still a major player (no pun intended) in their system. Whatever floats your boat is the only way to roll. But I must say that the CD player the OP is looking at is a damn fine player & it would be a great snag. I say go for it.

Same route here thanks to Phil.....damn you. LOL The wife thanks you that's for sure. Still haven't been able to knock down a dac. Looking for a Cary xciter dac at a decent price. Would love the 100t but good luck finding a demo for a decent price. Hot demand on those suckers.

Was thinking of going the syncromesh route, but if you combine that cost with a decent dac your well over a g-note. Think I'd rather throw it all into the dac. Wondering if something cheaper like the tube dac 11 plus the syncromesh might get me close to what a 2 grand dac offers....I dunno. Decisions decisions.....

Tony, you & your wife are quite welcome! Adding a nice DAC is the way to go, don't give up on snagging the 100t...it'll be well worth the wait. In my system adding the SM to compliment my DAC (circs 1995) made a huge difference. Whatever that thing does it does it in spades. I completely understand your dilemma about how quickly the funds can exit your wallet. Figuring out which direction to go into to best suit your system is half the fun. I know that when you pull the trigger the decision you make will be well thought out. Patience grasshopper...patience!
