I saw it with my 20 year old son Gabe and some of his friends last Saturday night.

The timing was tough because the next day I dropped Gabe of at the Marine recruiting center to ship out to Marine boot camp.

By the end of the movie his friends Louis, Hayden, and Ally and I were all in tears. I don't think Gabe was crying, but I didn't want him to see that I was.

I will pray for him every day.

Will pray for you all tonight, thats a dramatic post, thank him for his service, and may god keep him safe.

God bless america, and those who step up to protect us all.

My wife and I watched this movie -- finally -- last evening. We had wanted to see it since it was released, but had not been able to do so.

It is an extraordinary "represented action." That's a term from literary criticism which means that it is "the portrayal of a coherent series of events that creates for its audience an experience of self-justifying pleasure that differentiates art from reality."

Reality has no such coherence: The purpose of art is to cause pleasure; I have not yet figured out the purpose of reality, although I have been struggling to do so for over 60 years now. Yet, I know that reality is not purposefully organized to create pleasure for me.

It might seem odd that I say this movie creates an experience of "self-justifying pleasure." What was pleasurable about seeing four characters engaged in actions that caused the deaths of three of them (as well as of dozens of others), the near death of the title character, and unthinkable suffering along the way?

The answer is the same that has been given to explain the profoundly pleasurable effects of great tragedies since Aristotle wrote about this subject more than a couple of millenia ago: To see a human -- like us -- bear what Marcus had to bear and to survive, and to show the human spirit's capability "to strive, to seek, and not to yield" and, yes, to suffer is to see the extraordinary character of which humanity is capable.

To what extent is "Lone Survivor" fact v. fiction?

To borrow words from a famous fictional character, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

To see the strength, valor, and honor; the determination, resilience, and pride; the loyalty, patriotism and camaraderie of Marcus and his brothers in action is an elevation and celebration of the human spirit -- not regardless of the suffering portrayed in the film -- but because of it.

Thank God that we in America have real soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and members of the Coast Guard to put themselves in harm's way for us everyday!
