RT55 drop out issues

I recently obtained a pair of RT55 speakers. We tested them with a Peavey M-2600 power amp which supplies 75W into 8 ohms. We then connected them to an Optimus AV amp which supplies similar wattage. When you set the volume at 12 o'clock or so on either amp, the power drops out. I am assuming this is the amps internal protection circuit kicking in. Both amps are normally used to run a pair of 8 ohm PA speakers and we haven't had this issue before and we have run them well past 12 o'clock. Any ideas on why this is happening?

I have had 3 set, currently still using 2 sets of them. I can play mine very loud with no problems. They handle everything my Onkyo TX-NR809 gives them. All of mine have given completely trouble free use.

Despite what sounds like some thorough investigating on your part it really seems like the symptoms point to an amp issue. I don't know if there is any protection circuitry in the crossover of the RT55 that would cut off the speakers but if you are confident that it isn't your amp then you might want to look at the crossovers. I am not familiar with the circuitry on them, as far as I know its only a cross over. If there is a circuit protection feature in there they don't show on all 3 sets I have owned. Hopefully its something you can get figurered out, they are great speakers.

I really like these speakers and I am determined to get them working without these issues. I had already inspected the crossovers and there appears to be no protection device. Considering that both speakers/channels drop out simultaneously, I am not suspecting component failure in the crossovers and both speakers appear to be all original parts. If I have to make an assumption here, they may do better with a higher powered amp for more clean headroom. I read elsewhere that the RT55s work better with 14 or 16 gauge cables. We have been testing using shielded speaker cables and I suspect they have an 18 gauge conductor.

Easy Runnin

Since you have 4 binding post per speaker, try them with the jumper, without the jumper on the top set and without the jumper on the bottom set u see if the same thing happens.

Pa speakers are built for louder SPL's, home speakers are not in that league. The 12 o'clock position on the volume dial is dangerous territory for home speakers. Back off that volume dial dude, they are not going to be as loud as PA speakers.
