Listed in critical to ''grave" condition after a skiing accident...

LYON, France - Retired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is in "critical" condition following a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel.

The 44-year-old German was taken to hospital in Grenoble in a coma following the accident, and placed under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet a helmet at the time of the accident, the resort director, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, told Reuters.

The hospital in Grenoble released a statement later Sunday saying he had "suffered a serious head trauma and arrived in a coma, making it necessary for him to undergo a neurosurgical procedure."

Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm was unable to give any further information about his condition but confirmed he was on a private ski trip and had not been alone.

Gernigon-Lecomte said Schumacher, who has a vacation home in Meribel, had been skiing in backcountry, which usually means along unmarked trails.

"He fell around 11:00 am and hit a rock with his head," he added.

Schumacher, whose birthday is on Jan. 3, is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 victories among his achievements. He won his titles with Benetton and Ferrari.

He left the sport last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006. The German lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children.

Skiing is dangerous. How many notable people have you heard about getting hurt or killed in the last 10 years. A lot if you think about it.

    Update:
Michael Schumacher's condition has reportedly improved slightly, but the retired Formula One driver remains in critical condition in a medically induced coma.

After doctors at the university hospital in Grenoble observed an improvement in Schumacher's condition late Monday night, they opted to undertake a second operation to remove an additional cranial haematoma on the left side of his brain in order to reduce inter-cranial pressure. The Schumacher family, which remains by his bedside, were reportedly consulted on the decision, and he appears to have made it through the procedure. His doctors say that he will, however, remain in the coma for as long as necessary, and that it's too early to make predictions on the extent and timeframe of his eventual recovery.

"We have a strategy to correct a number of anomalies that continue and we want to give ourself some time during this phase of stability," said Professor Jean-Francois Payen. "There are some important matters we need to think about for the future."

The seven-time World Champion was taken to the hospital on Sunday following a skiing accident in which he hit his head against a rock, and has been listed in critical condition over the days since the incident.

An update from Fox Sports... It is not looking very good.

More than two weeks after Michael Schumacher was placed into a medically induced coma, multiple German papers reported Thursday that doctors fear the racing champion "could be in a coma forever."

Schumacher injured himself in a Dec. 29 skiing accident in the French Alps. He was taken to Grenoble University Hospital in France, where he was placed into the coma.

In the days since, the seven-time Formula One champion has undergone two brain surgeries and, despite some reports of small progress, doctors have been steadfast in their insistence that that status of his brain injuries remain critical. His 45th birthday was on Jan. 3, fans holding vigil outside the hospital in tribute.

According to Huffington Post UK on Thursday, the German magazine Focus spoke with experts on Schumacher's condition and reported that Schumacher could be in a coma forever". In addition, The Daily Mail reported doctors in France told the German newspaper Bild that Schumacher's condition is so grave there are currently no plans to wake him.

It is that fact that presents the biggest risk, even if Schumacher does awaken, The Times (UK) reported. "If Schumacher survives, he will not be Schumacher," Dr. Richard Greenwood, an acute brain injury specialist from University College London Hospital, told the paper. "He will be [a regular Joe] Bloggs. His rehabilitation will only be effective if he comes to terms with being Bloggs — and fulfils what Bloggs can do."

The biggest concern for doctors when it comes to patients in forced comas is that oxygen to the brain is reduced in a coma, and the longer the patient remains in a comatose state, the more likely long-term effects such as brain and organ damage are sustained.

The Daily Mail quoted German professor and neurological expert Gereon Fink as saying, "If the injuries are so severe that it would harm the patient, he is kept longer in the medically induced coma. Depending on where bleeding has taken place can lead to unilateral paralysis, speech disorders or personality changes."

    The latest:
Schumacher’s manager reports he is no longer in critical condition

    Tony DiZinno

    Jan 17, 2014, 10:53 AM EST

    Michael Schumacher AP

Michael Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, released an email update on Friday that says the seven-time Formula One World Champion remains in stable condition at University Center Hospital in Grenoble, France. This marks the first time Schumacher’s condition has not been labeled as “critical” since his skiing accident on Dec. 29 that has left him in a medically-induced coma.

This latest statement comes in response to some speculative, unconfirmed reports that have occurred over the last week or so.

“Unfortunately I have to repeat that any information regarding Michael’s health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as pure speculation,” said Kehm, via Sky Sports. She has had to make this declaration previously.

“I also repeat that Michael’s family is very happy and confident with the work of the team of doctors treating Michael, and they trust them completely. Michael’s condition is still considered as stable.”

Very sad, he's really in trouble. Exhibiting only reflexive responses after being off the coma inducing drugs is a very bad sign . There's more going on than is being released.
