I have my SRS speakers exposed to sunlight from a south-east facing picture window and I would like to keep the grills off of them. I am concerned that the light may damage the drivers if they are left uncovered. Does anyone know if this is something to be concerned with? Thanks Don

    Sunlight damages everything.
I would like to keep the grills off of them.

I never could understand why people like to look at the drivers. If you're looking at them while listening to music, you've never actually listened. That said, dust and grime in the air will damage the drivers as well.

The most vulnerable parts are the rubber surrounds. They're attacked by the oxygen in the air, and household pollutants, that's why you'll see brown oxidation on them. The heat from sunlight, and the UV rays will only accelerate the deterioration, by drying out the rubber. The grills protect them from this to a degree, and also from curious little fingers that love pushing in dust caps.

What F1 said. I was thinking the exact same thing as well before the thread actually opened and then saw my thoughts right there. Also like what i believe F1 was eluding to; get in the sweet spot, close your eyes, and get lost in the music.

    It sure does.

I am reminded daily that it's time for new curtains. "They look terrible. They are all sun faded"

As if I give a rats **** how they look from the street. As long as my Hi-Fi and flat screen look good I don't care.

But you could get that UV prevention film installed on your windows. It can eliminate 98% of the UV and over 70% of the infrared.

Another big issue... If you have a veneered finish, the sunlight will lighten the colors of the veneer. This is more noticeable on cherry. I have a pair of KEf 104/2 and the left speaker is a LOT lighter than the right...

UV damages and kills everything, causes cancer, spontaneous combustion, and in rare cases, shows embarrassing stains on your sheets.

The sun will bleach any wood be it solid or veneer and no matter what the type. However, in most cases with a finished item it is not the wood (at least not at first) that is affected by the sunlight, it's the color (stain, dye, toner) that is being bleached.

A side note about cherry, which is a fairly light wood, when left unfinished and out of direct sunlight wll, over time, turn much darker.
