Hello all,
I decided to re watch the Fast and Furious series as I really love those movies. I have the first and 2nd one on DVD , I skipped over Toyko Drift as I didn't really like that one, and have Fast and Furious 5 on Blu ray.

So with my broken collection and my Best Buy $20 in rewards points , I decided to pick up some of the holes. I repurchased the first one on Blu ray and picked up Fast and Furious 4 also on Blu ray. I spent a total of $6.85 for both movies. That rules and I love Best Buy's Reward Points.

I watched the First one and noticed better video quality but the black levels. I think the Black levels on the DVD are better but the video isn't as clear or sharp as the Blu ray. Sound quality wise they are about equal. I think they just transferred the DVD right to Blu ray. It' fine.

They come in these metal collector cases that I could care less about. I'm going to pick up Fast and Furious 6 this weekend and watch them all over the next few weeks.I might even pick up Toyko Drift but I don't remember how that even fits into the Story line , does it? Or is it a stand alone movie?
Dan

I'm not a huge "Fast and Furious" fan but I do remember watching Tokyo Drift. I think it's a stand alone movie. You only see one character from the main movies at the end (just in case someone thinks it would be a spoiler to tell you)...

Disclaimer: I haven't seen any of the Fast & Furious; but your comment piqued my interest regarding current movie technology.

"better video quality but the black levels. I think the Black levels on the DVD are better but the video isn't as clear or sharp as the Blu ray. Sound quality wise they are about equal. I think they just transferred the DVD right to Blu ray."

In a phone call with Bill Warren* a few years back, the topic of 3-D movies elicited this comment "it's all done by computers, so any movie could be 3-D."

I would guess that the transformation of DVD quality to BluRay is done by computer as well.

I went to IMDB to see IF my hunch might be right, that the 2 films' Cinematographers &/or Editors were not the same:

The Fast and the Furious (2001)
    Cinematography by Ericson Core
    Film Editing by Peter Honess

    Fast & Furious (2009)
    Cinematography by Amir Mokri
Film Editing by Fred Raskin & Christian Wagner

Based upon my old darkroom experience, I would think that even a computer can not provide details in blackness which were not captured in filming. One of the most difficult tasks I ever had in the dark, was finding the outlines of afros on members of the Emporia State University BB team shot against a black curtain. Dodging & burning, my attempts to resolve the hairlines from the curtain were futile. Lighting at the time of the photograph might have accomplished this; but I could not create what was not on the film. I have my doubts that even today, a tremendous amout of Photoshop would provide realistic results.**

FWIW - I am a huge fan, I have all of the movies.

I am quite positive FF Tokyo Drift takes places after 6, between the end of the movie and the short clip during the credits.

It follows the events of Han (?) and what he does in Tokyo

7 picks up after Tokyo Drift

Yeah even though Tokyo Drift didnn't fit in at the time, it's written in to the end of 6 and the new one being filmed as well so it's worth at least watching.

I agree that Tokyo Drift is a departure from the story of the others.....but its worth a watch if one has seen all the opthers. If nothing else, I thought the young break out actress Nathalie Kelley (Neela)was a refreshing exotic face on the screen. That was the first and last work that I have seen her in....I have not followed her career but it looks like she was/is to be in the 7th movie.

I thought Tokyo Drift was awesome. Deff one of my favorites. I thought of it as a unique stand-alone but after hearing how it ties into the story and seeing as they wanted to build upon the connection, i like it even more. Unfortunately, I'd imagine they will kill paul off in the series which blows.

I heard good things about F&F 6 from the critics this year.
