Refurb computers okay?

I have to get a new desktop, we just surf, play simple games, bejewelled, microsoft backgammon and run simple programs.
I was looking at newegg, they have some gateway refurbs with plenty of performance for our needs, some under 200, their onsite repair warranty, 55 for a year.
Wondering your opinion on comp. refurbs, kinda worried about the delicate components and such, but we have had great service for several years from our gateway floor demo we bought from frys.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the info, Makes me feel better about maybe purchasing one.
Is there really something called a decrapifier, and if so, do they offer decrapifiers for other things in life?
That could be a thread in and of itself.humpty dumpty was pushed -

IMO, you don't need a $55 warranty on a $200 computer.>

I thought about that, then i thought, what if the mother board goes out, or hard drive, or hard mother drive, theres money for that, and a bunch o money for some nerd here in town to pop it in and install the soft to bites.

I'm so out of touch on hardware anymore, it's sad. Guess that means I'm getting old/domesticated/etc. Work doesn't allow me to play with consumer parts anymore.Main Surround -

Do you have any Goodwills or Salvation army stores nearby? I'm typing this on a $14 dollar computer I bought at GW. I already had the WinXP software though. Make sure you get Win7.>

scottyboy, I'd offer to build you one too if you were in New England. Even though Gateway isn't Gateway anymore, it's still a good deal. You should avoid the "white box" no-name specials that a lot of discount outlets have. The Gateway will most likely have a decent power supply, and a motherboard from a reputable manufacturer.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Scotty, I too could build you something for cheap but alas we are not close
That said refurbs are normally a GREAT deal. Normally anything that would go wrong will do it under the warranty time period. If your just looking for something basic a refurb gateway off newegg should work fine for you."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." What OS does the refurb have on it? I don't mind Win 8 but did spend $5 on a program called Start8. Makes Win8 look just like Win7.

We purchase refurbs from Newegg at work for less critical tasks. Not sure where nbrowser gets the idea they are new returned computers. I've never seen a "new" refurb. They have all been leased computers, returned after the lease period (used).
That said, we have had excellent reliability from them. -
Thanks everyone, Thinkin i will get one.
The ones I glanced at had win 8, would def. be interested in making operate like 7.
Will look into that link, thanks.humpty dumpty was pushed -
Scotty best $5 I ever spent. Brought back the start button and lets you boot straight to desktop.
IMO it looks and feels almost like Win 7. -

I like Classic Shell just as well, and it's free.
