Monitor 4 Decision

Picked up a pair of Monitor 4 speakers yesterday for $6.00. They are the later version with a MW6502 and the square tweeter. Apparently the tweeters must of been bad at some point and were replaced. One has a SL2500 and the other I am not sure, except it is rectangular. Neither tweeter fits the square opening and new screw holes were drilled to mount the tweeters. Figured for $6 I would buy them anyway. Trying now to decide if I should find replacement tweeters or just dismantle them and part them out. The MW6502's are in good shape and not frozen. Any thoughts?

It seems that there were several versions of the Monitor 4 (Monitor 4 = Peerless, possibly SL-1000; Monitor 4A = square tweeter; Monitor 4 Series 2 = SL-1500). Then there was the Monitor 4.5 = square tweeter and Monitor 4.6 Series 2 = SL-2500.

You might have a tough time finding the "square" tweeter. You could certainly turn a nice profit by parting out and buy another set of Monitor 4 or other.

Thanks for the input skrol. Kinda leaning toward parting out. It is definitely a square 4 ohm tweeter that is needed. Probably cost me at least $30 - $40 to get 2 tweeters and get them back into shape.

This is how you make a rectangular tweeter (SL1500) in a square opening. Thankfully whatever the white caulk was that the guy used came off pretty easy. Unfortunately the SL1500 was cracked and I could not salvage it.

at $6 that's a good deal. Even if you had to butcher the speaker why would someone use white caulk and not a black silicone at the very least.Horrible work is putting it mildly. There was an ad on C/L for 4s @$40 firm a few towns away. I did briefly talk to the dude and he even at 84 was firm w/ his price. I don't need little bookies but if a freebe happened I would take them.I don't need any more speakers, what I would like is either to move out the Time Frame 350s for Vandersteen 2ce sigs or Klipsch Forte series 1s.Then I would have SDA, acoustic suspension 2-way w/ the ADC 303ax and then horns and passives from the Klipsch or time arrayed from the Vandersteens. That would cover what I know to be a well rounded variety of speaker styles and sounds.

Bruce, I'd part them out. You'll get $25-30.00 each for the MW6502s, and another $20.00 for the crossover pair. I hate parting out, but if they ruined the front baffle with additional screw holes, that would have to be repaired, and new textured black vinyl installed.
Apply that to a pair with Peerless Tweets.

If you have the grills then you could fill the holes with black RTV and replace the tweeters and be good most folk leave the grills on anyway so only we would know

You guys are msking it hard to decide!!!! My first thought was to part out. When I took the wrong tweets out I checked the "new" screw holes and fortunately the have not gone through the wood all the way. The white caulk cleaned up (or off) nicely. Can get replacement tweeters for around $35 and have a decent little set of speakers for under $50. Have a friend that wanted me to find something for a garage setup so this would work nicely. On the other hand I could part out if there are Polk members that need parts from them. I am really getting frustrated dealing with the general public on Ebay and Craigslist. Most everyone I have dealt with have been less then truthful about items and not sure I want to play that game.

Hey Dave..... Actually have a set of 4's with Peerless. Been looking for a MW6500 to replace a MW6502. Had 2 shipped to me a few weeks ago and both were frozen. Eventually will find a good one and get the 4's back up and running. Will probably get new tweeters for the $6 4's and give them to my friend.

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Did not even pursue a refund. Probably should have. More of a hassle then what it is worth. Hard to say if the guy is a scammer. He claimed both speakers worked and sounded "awesome". It was funny that the second speaker he sent me he complained that it cost him $17.00. I did not really care. The best part was that the postage on the box was all old .20 stamps and under to equal the $17.00. Literally 2/3 of the top of the box was covered in stamps. Should have taken a picture.... it was comical. FYI he is out of Florida and his ebay name is Foxstang19902012.

    What a goof...
I guess you can't get mad at people like that they go though life trying so hard to do good and just can't figure it out.
I can just see him trying to lick all those stamps and get them straight and stuck down..... haha
