Do I have a bad sub or a bad AVR Subwoofer out?

Hi, I'm hoping maybe somebody can help me. Recently, I noticed that my subwoofer was no longer making any sound (it has power and I have replaced the cable to my AVR to be sure it wasnt a bad cable). When removing the cable from the Subwoofer output on my Pioneer Elite VSX-33 and tapping the end of the cable it does produce sound. Additionally, when hooking up my bluray player directly to the subwoofer and playing a cd it also produced bass.
My initial thought is that it must be the receiver right?? Outside of the sub issue, my receiver seems to be functioning normally, all other speakers are working, HDMI outputs are all fine, and I did reset the reciever just to be sure. I have also ran the MCACC set up and the subwoofer is not producing any sounds with the test tones and is not being recognized by the setup. I have all speakers set to small and subwoofer set to on through the AVR setup. I have not changed any settings in the last two years when everything was working great. Is this definetly an issues with the LFE output on my receiver or can this be a problem with the sub? I want to try and be sure before considering the major hassle of sending my receiver in for service out of warranty. Thanks!!

Really what you need it a way to test either the sub or the receiver. Since your receiver has preouts you could try plugging the sub into something else (maybe center) to see if you get any audio on a low setting. That's the only way to test it I can think of without actually testing with different equipment. You don't mention your sub model, but if it supports high voltage input you can run some speaker wire from the outputs on the receiver from that to test.

Hope you figure it out. Good luck. :)

Edit: Missed your sig, your sub does have speaker level inputs, so give those a shot instead, if it still doesn't play it's like the amp on the sub.

Im gonna borrow my brother's sub today and see if that responds. If not, I can safely assume its the sub out on the AVR. So, can the sub amp be blown but still make sound when hooked up directly to my bluray player?

You hooked it up to the preouts on the bluray and it worked? Pretty sure it'll work with another receiver then, I'd still try to make sure, but if the sub is making sound from another device and not the avr, it's probably the avr at fault.

I think your sub is ok since you get sound from the blu ray player. Again use the pre out on receiver to play either l or r channel directly or center and you should still get some sound. If the receiver not detecting during setup, it sounds like you have a bad sub out rca. Maybe simple fix like a bad solder joint or it could be more complicated. Good luck diagnosing.

Yep it worked hooked up directly to the bluray player. I'm gonna hook it up to the center channel and see what happens. I'll also hook up another sub and see what happens. Hoping its an easy fix with my AVR, its gonna be a PITA having it out for service - kinda the heart of my system. :(

just an update....tried my brothers sub today and nothing, wouldnt even come out of sleep. Moved the cable to the center preamp out directly above it and bingo had sound. Brought the Pioneer to the repair shop and am hoping its nothing too costly but I cant have a theater system with no bass lol. Strange thing is all the other outputs seem to be fine, it appears just the subwoofer out is shot.

You probably could have fixed it yourself if it was just a simple solder job and saved some coin, but having someone more knowledgable do the fix is not a bad idea.

Yeah I tripled checked the settings and even reset the AVR to make
Sure it was correct. Hopefully, the repair guy is knowledgeable as his shop kinda looked like a dive. <fingers crossed>

Well, didn't get the news I was hoping for. Although, the repair shop I used seemed totally incompetent. After "looking at it" for almost two weeks, they shop called and said that the digital board was defective and deemed the receiver "beyond repair". Honestly, I'm stunned because the only thing that seemed to not be working was the LFE out. The shop did not provide much of an answer to my questions so I was pretty pissed. I'm debating whether or not to drive it about an hour away to have an authorized Pioneer Elite shop take a look at it. The big downside there is cost, the minimum repair cost is $165.00 and it could go up from there. I did in the meantime pickup a Yamaha 2020 on clearance at Bestbuy so I can take my sweet time with the Elite since it will be just be used in game room if I get it repaired.

I know its a bummer but...

You can always run the sub using speaker out of AVR and manually adjust crossover

    Good luck

  • I have the exact same Pioneer receiver and experience the same, exact problem you had. Can you update on what it was, or if you fixed it? I too have a Velodyne subwoofer ( CT-100 ). I know it works, as I can hear the "hum" when I touch the cable. I even tried another subwoofer in the house ( with a brand new cable at that ), and the receiver is not sending a signal to either sub. Its definitely the receiver, but is it fixable? Thanks...

He hasn't been around in almost 6 years. Try this. Tap on their "User Name" & when it opens - at top right of page tap "Message" & message them. Should go to their email address.... not sure its gonna work after not login in for 6 years though. Good luck
