Does anyone have any information or thoughts about Polk's Reference Monitor L.F. 14 subwoofer? I think it is from the mid 80's.

A little earlier than that (late 1970s); yeah, it's been discussed before here.

Thanks for the info mhardy. Since it looks like you owned one in the past do you think it is worth pursuing if one is available?

I would love to have one of those. Just to have. From what I have read about them they are not all that impressive as a sub. By today's standards anyway. But I would still snatch one up if the price is right. But then again I tend to be a speaker hoarder.--Gary--

I have begun to be a speaker hoarder,... I mean collector myself. Collector seems to sound better when talking to the wife. What would be a reasonable price for one?
-
I really have no idea what a good price would be. Hopefully someone will chime in. Have you checked the bay for completed listings? I have not really seen many of those come up for sale though. What is the asking price of the one you are looking at?--Gary--

$29.00 plus shipping

And....shipping is how much?--Gary--

$50.00

I would probably go for that. You seen it in person? Make sure the MW's are not frozen. What condition are the cabinets?--Gary--

Not sure at this point. Have not seen the unit. Actually I am close enough to drive and pick it up and save on the shipping. Can look it over at that time. In the whole scheme of things I have been screwed for much ,much more than the cost of this.

It is not an impressively performing subwoofer by modern standards; it is historically significant (I donated mine back to Polk; I hope it actually got there!). It would be great with a pair of original Monitor 4 or Monitor 5.
The foam on the PR is likely deteriorating, as mine was (you can see the 'bubbles' in the photos).
Don't pay too much.
I think $29 plus $50 = $79 all in would be the max I'd invest in one... -
I got one along with some Monitor 10Bs a few months ago. I ran the three for a while but the LF-14 didn't seem to add much so it's in storage now.

Thanks for the input. Will let you know what I decide.

You don't happen to be in Georgia or South Carolina do ya?--Gary--

Well I drove about an hour today to purchase the LF 14 for $30. It was cosmetically in beautiful shape. Even the pr was in like new condition. BUT.......both 6 1/2 MW drivers were frozen. And not because it below zero here today with the wind chill. What a shame. I passed on the purchase. I have more than enough bad MW drivers now.

Bruce, find two nice ones, and make yourself another pair or RTA-12sHome Theater/2 Channel:

My wife has already informed me we are supposed to be thinking about downsizing so another set of 12's might cause problems. OK it will cause problems. Thought the LF 14 would be an interesting conversation piece. Making a run tomorrow to pick up a pair of 4's for$ 6.00. Hoping they have at least one good MW in them. Don't look very good cosmetically but perhaps they will have some good parts.

It sounds awful but is a historical piece of Polk. If you do get it, I'd be willing to buy it and get it into the Polk Museum. Half that place is member donations anyways.
Westmassguy - That's not really possible.
-mCTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
As far as I know it is still available. I met with the seller this afternoon and cancelled the purchase. Let me know how you want to proceed and I can contact the seller or give you the sellers contact info.
