5.1 vs 2.1

Is there a big difference in using a 5.1 receiver in 2 channel mode vs a 2.1 stereo receiver. Was looking at buying a new Harman Kardon or a Marantz running a couple of Rti 10's. Thanks for any info.

Most AVRs are rated as "2 channels driven". So, yes, due to the shared power supply, you will have more power/current available as a 2 channel system run off a 5 channel AVR than you would using the same AVR to drive 5 channels."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

So a 5.1 using only 2 channels would be just as powerful as a 2 channel receiver?

depends on the receiver, look at the 2 channels driven power rating in the specs2 Channel(work in progress):DAC: Schiit modi 2 uberAmp:Parasound 1200 MK IISub:RBH 1010-SEP Speakers: Monitor 5A peerlesscurrently running some krk rokit 3g since the HK pre outs died and i need to start breaking everything down to move in a couple monthsHeadphones:Source: tidalDAC: schiit modius epre: schiit sysAmp: AQ dragonfly black/ schiit magni2 Cans: Velodyne V-True, Grado SR225i, sennheiser x drop gaming headsetPC:DAC: schiit modius e(over spdif)pre: schiit sysspeakers: prenous eris 5 xtSub: Earthquake Sound MiniMe-P63most of my comments are passing on of info, im a noob, im just trying to help how i can, if im wrong or out of place to comment, dont hesitate to let me know "WITH WILLING HEARTS AND SKILLFUL HANDS, THE DIFFICULT WE DO AT ONCE, THE IMPOSSIBLE TAKES A BIT LONGER, WITH COMPASSION FOR OTHERS. So a 5.1 driven on 2 channels 80 watts per channel is as good as a 2 channel receiver at 80 watts per channel?

It's not that simple, all watts are not created equal and in fact, it's more about current than watts per channel. A 2 channel receiver is likely to have a better power supply than your average AVR, but it's still a receiver. Unless you need a tuner, you'd be much better off getting a nice 2 channel integrated amp.Political Correctness'.........defined

Don't need a tuner , any suggestions on a 2 channel integrated amp. Around $500. Thanks

You should be able to pick up a used NAD or Cambridge in that price range. If you doubled that, there's a lot more to consider. I noted you mention 2.1, are you using a sub?Political Correctness'.........defined

No sub. Hoping to run a blu ray to play dvds and cds also a sat receiver and out to tv. Is this possible? Only want 2 channels using Rti 10's.Can you run HDMI out to amp and out to tv?

In that case you will need an AVR.Political Correctness'.........defined

AVRs also carry the benefit of room correction software that stereo receivers and integrated amps do not. Not the end all be all but very helpful especially with movies in less-than-ideal rooms.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |
