Monitor 75 damage

When I connect to just the top two posts I get no sound ( I was testing my hypothesis). I know my friend hooked them up improperly and was clipping while running thru only the top posts.

What is damaged? Should replacement tweeters fix this? If so, what model tweeter? Are the top posts dedicated solely to the tweeter?

The top post go to the tweeter network -

It could be the tweeter or the crossover. Are both speakers damaged? If not, you can swap the tweeters between both speakers and see if it follows the tweeter or stays with the speaker.

Yes. He blew them both. I'm worried about the crossovers. I'd hate to buy new tweets only to find out there is bigger issues.

Usually when modern Polk crossovers blow it is a resistor and it is very obvious...

I would take the rear terminal cup off and visually inspect the crossover...

Ok. Here is some pictures. The tweeters are blown and the XOs are fried. Any assistance in finding these parts would be greatly appreciated.

Wow...haven't seen toasted crossovers like that in along time. May I ask how this happened ?

VR3 can take care of you, but this looks like a total rebuild, not just a resistor....which will cost some. Then your not sure about the tweets on top of that.

Hmm... actually that is pretty normal for the modern day Polk crossovers. The crossovers pretty much self destruct to save the drivers. Granted that one is an extreme case.

"I know my friend hooked them up improperly and was clipping while running thru only the top posts."

My understanding is he was only hooked to the top terminals and his weak onkyo receiver was clipping and shutting off. Rather than figure out the problem he just turned it back on and kept doing it repeatedly. He has more money than common sense. I doubt he even looked at the 4 page manual.

That being said, what kinda dollar amount am I looking at to fix them?

I had posted earlier, but I don't know where it went. Anyway, call Polk's CS and key them in on the situation, let them know that your a member here and they will give you a discount. I don't have any idea what it will set you back, but I would also make sure that your woofers are O.K. before placing an order. Try a 9v battery and see if you get any movement, or even just lightly pushing on the woofer. Let us know how it's going, but CS will get you going in the right direction.

Sounds like I'd have to mail them back. Quite frankly, if its over $125, including the tweeters, I'd rather just flip them as is with full disclosure. I have zero investment in them right now. He just said keep them.

I would just order new crossovers from Polk, would be under $100

Maybe, plus you won't know about any damage to the tweets which would be close to another 70-100 bucks with shipping.

I would be more inclined to can them, buy a used set of speakers for a couple hundies. Maybe sell the remaining woofers and cabinets.

I spoke with Ken at Polk and he took care of me. I'd have to agree that Polk has amazing customer service and treats people very well. Thanks for the help everyone.

Also, regarding the tweeters, I hooked them up to another speaker to test them and I'm sure they're blown. No worries though, everything is being sorted.

    Polk has my utmost respect.
