Hi all, This is my first post to the Polk forum. I recently came across an pair of SDA 2A's. They are in pretty rough condition but will make for a nice restoration project. I have read a considerable amount regarding them on this forum and others. I would
like to pair them with my Sansui AU-517 amp. I have read that you can't use the SDA function with amps that are not common ground or dual mono amps. The Sansui is dual mono, but when I check continuity between the neg. speaker terminals I get a reading. Has anyone else used a Sansui 517 or 717 to drive their SDA's? Thanks for the input.

Tim

As long as you get a very low reading between the neg terminals you will be fine. And by low I mean below a ohm.

Checked it and I get about 1.5 ohms. It's the same on my Yamaha and Marantz amps. Is 1.5 to high?

You should be fine. I am betting if you touch the DMM leads together you will get around the same not all leads work too well. If you are getting that same reading on several amps that you know are common ground like every avr I have ever seen the issue is the leads and the all should be fine.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. It's doubtful the AU-517 will be able to handle the 2As. The Sansui is 65 watt, and only rated for 8 ohm loads. The 2As are 4 ohm, and drop well below that at certain frequencies. It may work fine at low to possibly moderate levels, but the protection circuit will undoubtedly (and hopefully) shut it down if it goes beyond it's rating.

Although the 517 is a very robust 65 watt x 2 integrated and has 48K of storage capacitance and two transformers. It is not the best choice for larger SDAs as mentioned above. But, if you have some Monitor 7s or Monitor 10s I bet it would be a wonderful match. I should try that myself since I own a 35/6 lbs AU-517. But I'm waiting to have someone look at its phono pre-amp which has some problems. Otherwise it's a nice sounding piece!
