So a month ago I listed my Bianchi Giro 27 speed road bicycle on Ebay for sale. starting at $499.00 w no reserve. I tried for two weeks to sell it first on CL. but since the weather is turning cold up here no bites. Two days before the ten day auction was to end a guy locally saw it on CL and came over and test rode it. Talked me into selling it to him for $600.00. so I agreed and ended the auction early by a day in a half. now today I get my monthly bill from Ebay for $61.00 . I was like "what the hell" I only sold two pair of slippers last month ? Here on my invoice for last month was a charge of $50.00 for an "End auction style listing early fee"on the bike. What a crock ? I built up over a thousand possitive feedback over 13 years just to get treated like this? Just sending out this to my Polk bros. So it does not happen to you. Peace,D

LOL...I don't use Ebay for anything any more. I think they have a fee in there for just perusing their site. CL only for me from now on.

They are only supposed to charge an "end early fee" if the auction already had a bidder. If there weren't any bidders, you should contact eBay customer service. It's worth a shot.

I refuse to sell on ebay anymore. Pure craziness. If I'm selling something on CL and it doesn't sell. Oh well. Guess I'm not selling it. I refuse to pay ebay 10%+ to help me sell anything anymore...

I did have a bid on the bike of $499.00. So I guess that is what happened? Thanks for your insight. D

If the auction ended with one bidder tell them you contacted them to inform them the item was broken. If the auction was closed less than 24 hours before it was supposed to end then they can try get ya. Best thing to do in future is remove the persons bid then end it. You could say that your kid listed the item without you even knowing that you even had a kid, he just showed up at your house after all that time and listed the item and took off never to return.

I hear ya buddy. It's clearly a buyer's market on eBay and there's nothing really out there to really protect the seller. People just seem to go to eBay not to sell quality items, but more of unload what they don't want. There's no full disclosure or time spent to accurately describe their items. Most of the time sellers just list their stuff via a mobile app. Don't even get me started about the packaging done by most eBayers...

I continue to have relative success with ebay, although I don't sell as much as I did at one point. You just have to read the rules and know what you are getting into. In a small market like mine, even after fees etc. I am going to make more money on ebay than Craigslist, and unlike some of you dudes I don't keep closets full of speakers

The rule is that you get one early ending a year without getting charged fees (unless they JUST changed that). So I would call if this is your first time. The bottom line is, you still made more than you thought you would on your local craigslist even with the fees, you perhaps you got your money's worth after all.

Can't tell you how many times I see something on ebay while it's on CL.
Stuff I bid on, too. So let's say I see two items and bid on yours, that one ends,
and you drop yours just before I win.Now what? That's why I check before bidding now.
That's why your ebay sale wasn't going anywhere.

No, not actually the finest of points, especially when you want the greatest number of potential buyers to see your item's listing. Oftentimes, buyers - myself included - will look on Craigslist rather than eBay looking to do business with someone we can actually call, meet face-to-face with and shake the hand of. Also, selling locally, the inherent hassles, risks and costs of shipping items can be eliminated.

Therefore, I think it's fine to list items in both places with one condition: the eBay-listed items must be listed as Buy It Now only listings, not auction-type listings. Then, once the item is purchased on either end, you can immediately pull the ad from the other site. Had the OP done this in the first place, he wouldn't have had any fees or problems with eBay.

How is putting it up on ebay and listing it on CL good for anybody but the seller?
As a buyer, it makes me angry. How about I put up a bid on ebay, don't pay for it
after the auction ends, then buy it cheaper from the local CL ad ,since now you
no longer have it on ebay? That's good for me as a buyer, helps get it cheaper.
It also makes me an as*h***

I have had an item listed locally at the same time as eBay. If you do that you need to put in your auction description that it is also listed locally and you reserve the right to end the auction early. I had not made a habit of doing that and have never had to end one early, but that is the way eBay told me to go about that situation.

Sounds like the bidder complained to ebay.

It's not a feud. It's both sides airing their gripes.
I got played a couple times both from ebay, and a CL seller stringing me along to see if he could
make more via ebay. I know now to double check stuff to make sure this isn't going to happen
again. Listed on both means I'm not bidding or calling/emailing on CL. I don't blame people for doing it,
but be aware buyers are paying attention.

I thought I knew about all the BS fees that Ebay charged, but this one is new to me. Ebay used to be a good place to sell. Not anymore. I went from selling about 20 items per year, to less than 3 in the last 12 months. Those were items that just didn't have any local market.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I've been on eBay for 13 years now; sold 3 vehicles & parted another to the point a Topekan called me from NJ to ask that I hold the unibody until he could drive back to KS in the rusted-out one he'd just bought on eBay. Here's the comment a Texan posted after we picked him up @ the Manhattan Intl Airport with his new 88 LC + full tank of gas:

I'd buy a house 'sight unseen' from this man; honest, helpful, and sincere!!!!! themazza254 ( 109) Jun-21-08 20:32
    Toyota : Land Cruiser (#330243201821) US $4,405.00

I've only ended one auction early; selling another 88 LC for $1600 on the day the auction ended w/o bids & No Reserve @ $1495 opening bid. I felt uneasy doing so, as I feel like my rep on eBay = my word.

I've not sold anything on CL. Have reservations about opening my door to a complete stranger who has risked nothing more than dropping by for the opportunity to "kick tires," haggle & tell me I'm asking too much.

as rooftop said, I live in too small of a market to think CL is going to bring anything close to "market value." Witness the 2 sets of 2.3TLs for $500 that a PF member drove from MO to score.

You didn't read my post very closely, did you? You couldn't have "put up a bid" on eBay if the item was listed as a Buy It Now only posting. That way, you either agree to buy it at the posted price or you don't do anything. And to answer your question as to how listing it on CL and eBay is good for anybody but the seller, it would allow the buyer to not pay shipping, not be concerned about the item being damaged in shipping and to likely be able to get the item cheaper since the seller isn't paying eBay's fees.

As the seller of a double-posted item, I'd remove the eBay listing only after I had cash in hand from a local buyer who I would have made aware that it was also listed on eBay. That way, he'd know that at any moment someone could do the Buy It Now option on eBay and that I'd be obligated to honor that sale contract.
