Hello from Berlin,

so I did it. After 8 years Rti 12, RTi 8 and the Csi5 listen experience, it was time for a back further:).
Now I´m a proud owner of the LSiM Series. And what shall I say - I really loved the RTi but now I hear my all music CD´s and
movie´s in a new dimension.

Nevertheless I´m not sure If I did it right with the rear speakers. I chose the 702 F/X for the rear. Now I´m thinking maybe it would be better when I take the 703?
I listen to music in Stereo. Only for movie I need the rear´s. My amp is the Yamaha RX-A 3010.

Another problem is my couch is direct at the wall. So I have to place the Speakers directly beside the couch. My Hifi Seller told me it would be better to use the F/X Speaker. I´m really impressed of the sounding from the F/X. But maybe I´m more impressed with the 703? I still could change the F/X to the 703.

What do you think?

Greetings from Berlin

Oliver

I think your right, the fx type of speakers will work well to fill the back of the room up with sound but not if they are right next to you. Get the 703's if you can and your localisation of the sound will work better for the listening position.

The F/X speakers are at the wall not right beside me. The 703 i could only place directly beside me.

Yes but the 703's that close will have the desired effect for panning. The fx will diffuse the sound and with todays HT preamps and AVR's there really is no need for a speaker such as the fx's. The fx are good for a 5.1 encoded movie that matrix's the sound into 7.1 assuming you can place them properly or a 5.1 system, again assuming you can place them properly.

Venicebeach, congrats on your new upgrade!!

Personally, I think you've got the right set up. I've used direct radiating speakers in my surround set up, now currently using FXiA6's and it's the best surround speaker I can recommend!!!

Plus, weather you're using a 5.1 or more, you've got the right the speaker in that spot IMO. I'm using a 7.x and the FX's are flawless.

If you expand to a 7.1, then get the 703's for rears.

    I didn't read anything about room or space, just that his couch was against the wall, in that case, the FX is exactly what would work best, as the description from the Polk website states;

Extreme surround performance and maximum placement flexibility, customized for any room with the wall distance setting that tailors response to compensate for proximity to corners or nearby walls, reducing “boominess” while maintaining deep bass effects and realistic surround ambience.

AND, Extended Linear Motion voice coil design allows lots of movement in a limited space, eliminating impedance and extending mid- and high-frequency response.

For a room with space to the sides and rear Polk states the f/x speakers work will about 20 degrees back from the listening position like this:
    POLKfxsurroundplacement.jpg

    However,
    Polk Audio wrote:
If your seating area adjoins the rear wall, or if you cannot place speakers on the side wall, you'll have to position the speakers on the rear wall. In this case, bi-directional (bi- or di-pole) speakers are recommended, since they will produce the most diffuse effect. If you use front-firing speakers, do not aim them at the audience as one would a front speaker, but point them straight forward so the sound projects past the audience (figure on right). Another option is to mount in-wall speakers in the ceiling, aiming them downward at the listening area.

So, you may want to try the f/x speakers on the rear walls like shown here in leroyjr1 picture: http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l182/leroyjr1/IMG_0051.jpg?t=1235965164

Awesome man, very nice. If I were to make any changes to that set up......I would widen the mains out some more, like 10" to a foot. And I'd raise the surrounds to at least 2 feet above ear level.

You made a great upgrade over your RTi's

Hard to tell the distance but...I agree, try to get the left and right front in a triangle to the main listening position like show in the diagram I posted. Also, play with the height of the surrounds. Having them that low might work for some listening to surround music.....but that setup is better used with direct radiating speakers. For movies 2-3 ft from the ear is better.....put on a TrueHD Blu-Ray and go to work.

You've got toe-in on your mains, that's great! By widening them out, you should be able to improve imaging.

For the FX's, the surround channel is for indirect content, by raising them up to 2', or like 2 - 3' as WLDock supported, you can increase the effect.

Here's a great link from Polk's own web site on speaker placement. This has some very helpful information and hopefully, can help you with more than just the few questions you have here

Have you considered ceiling mounts for the surrounds? May be the solution you're looking for.

With my front I have a triangle now to my listening position.

okay I´ll try another positions for the rear. So I guess I keep the rears. before I had the rti8 for the rear and it wasn´t that cinema feeling like with the F/X. Just thought I´ll get more for the money with the 703... but maybe I´m wrong.

I have a big carpet under my couch ..I already trying some room treatments... working on it.

I would say the surrounds could stand to be moved in (away from the side wall) maybe 6"-12" in addition to being raised a 2-3'.

    Nice setup!

I so want to go to Germany and visit the home land. I want to go to Octoberfest and do a full Pub tour. I want to drink German beer in Germany.

Nice system. Suggestion , I would rehang the surround speakers to 72 inches to the Tweeters, you'll get a much better overall effect out of the surround speakers.
