After some thought, Cat's In the Cradle by Cat Stevens is the saddest song ive ever heard:-(

'Cat's in the Cradle' was sung by Harry Chapin, the writer/singer of many sad songs: 'Taxi', 'Mr. Tanner', 'A Better Place to Be', etc.

He is probably thinking of Cat Steven's Father and Son.

How about "Sad Songs" by Elton John? Speaking of him, probably "Empty Garden" (about John Lennon) is one of the saddest songs around.

Elton's song I Guess that's why they Call it the Blues is a pretty good one in this regard (sad-wise)...
Also, there's a song called Madeleine by a guy called Stu Nunnery... that would be on my list, too.

Another vote for "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. Likely the most touching music video I've ever watched.

2nd place: "Missing You" Steve Perry.

Anything from my wife's music catalogue. She's a sad song specialist. Anyone else have the same experience?

For me, the closest I can think of is "I'll Be Missing You." Either Sting & The Police or Puff Daddy & The Family versions. RIP Biggie Smalls!

No sweat, Bob, that 'Cat's in the Cradle' gets me every time too, having grown up with a dad who traveled a lot for his job.

Vince Gill - "When I Call Your Name"

Several of his songs would fit this genre. Most are very well recorded.

Some excellent song choices already listed here. To the list I would add The Unaddressed Letter by Dave (Baby) Cortez. In the song, he's reading the words to a letter he's written to his ex, describing the physical and emotional difficulties he's been experiencing since she left, and expressing remorse for the bad things he did during their relationship. At the end the letter is unaddressed because he does not know her current whereabouts.

    To the Last Whale

Crosby and Nash... This one always chokes me up..

Over the years you have been hunted
by the men who throw harpoons
And in the long run he will kill you
jus to feed the pets we raise,
put the flowers in your vase
and make the lipstick for your face.
Over the years you swam the ocean
    Following feelings of your own
Now you are washed up on the shoreline
I can see your body lie
It's a shame you have to die
to put the shadow on our eye
    Maybe we'll go,
    Maybe we'll disappear
It's not that we don't know,
It's just that we don't want to care.
    Under the bridge
    Over the foam
    Wind on the water,
    Carry me home.

    Queensryche= Silent Lucidity

My cousin hated this song from the moment he heard it. Several yrs later we'd find out why. He died in a single car crash and the lyrics of the song made me stop and cry the first time I heard it after he died. Still to this day very cold chills over my complete body.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhat-xUQ6dw

    Hush now don't you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye

    You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
    Spinning in your head

Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game
    Of life

So here it is, another chance
Wide awake, you face the day
    Your dream is over...

    Or has it just begun?

    mine had just begun:sad:

"I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive"
    Hank Williams

Now you're lookin' at a man that's gettin' kind-a mad
I had lot's of luck but it's all been bad
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

My fishin' pole's broke the creek is full of sand
My woman run away with another man
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

A distant uncle passed away and left me quite a batch
And I was livin'g high until that fatal day
    A lawyer proved I wasn't born
    I was only hatched

Ev'rything's again' me and it's got me down
If I jumped in the river I would prob'ly drown
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

These shabby shoes I'm wearin' all the time
Are full of holes and nails
And brother if I stepped on a worn out dime
I bet a nickel I could tell you if it was heads or tails

I'm not gonna worry wrinkles in my brow
'Cause nothin's ever gonna be alright nohow
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

I could buy a Sunday suit and it would leave me broke
If it had two pair of pants I would burn the coat
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

If it was rainin' gold I wouldn't stand a chance
I wouldn't have a pocket in my patched up pants
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

Great song. I'm a big fan of Hank I, II, and III.
