How long ago was that? Maybe it was me fishing, we'll never really know but how funny is that? When I was young and dumb I almost got married on the church on the corner.

We could easily have been there at the same time. I only went up with my friend about 4 or 5 times but it would have been in the early to mid-80's. I loved the stretch of deep water right at the campground, but would also go upstream to where it was more shallow. I liked bumping salmon eggs and using spinners, (but never worms) and I didn't have a fly rod at that time. For the spring, salmon eggs were best but when the water got lower and slower, I imagine fly fishing was best.

We would fish from sun up to sun down and loved every minute of it.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I think you'll love it. Be thinking about winter access, approach to heating (wood burning stove, pellet stove, conventional fireplace, etc). Possibly have a well dug for water. I use a pellet stove to heat our 2500 sq ft home. Propane is off-the-charts expensive for heating purposes.

That's an exciting proposition. Always wanted to build a log cabin.

During the 80's my family and I spent every weekend at the house making it nicer, fishing, hunting, entertaining and relaxing.

I'd walk up to the campground to begin and fish just past our home where a tributary runs into Pine Creek. Starting in the riffles and finishing in the big deep flat water was great.

We gotta help CCNJ get a place on Pine Creek ASAP. Maybe he can close by opening day.

Sounds good to me NJP. Isn't it great helping others spend their money? Kind of the purpose of many of the threads here.

After crashing at relation's homes for the last 18 years in MN I am finally getting around to building a 'shack' for me and the wife to stay at. We have some property in North Central MN, and will be using it as our base when retirement comes a calling in a few years.
I did learn that Carpentry and I are not the closest of friends.
My hats are off to anyone who does that for a living. At 45 and never really having had to physically work day in and day out I came to appreciate how tired one can get lugging building supplies around and swinging a hammer all day.
It will be finalized next year. This year was getting it dried in and insulated.
To the OP, it is going to be worth it to me as in a few years as i will be living it full time while I figure out what I really want to do for a living. Hope it works out which ever direction you take.

The Pine Creek area is beautiful and lots to do outdoors related, but I think it would exceed the 2 hour drive requirement? We live about 30 minutes from Pine Creek and go there often. It has become more active over the years but is still a nice place to get away from it all. If you do come up this way I would suggest the first weeks of October...lots of color and minimal bugs/humidity.
I would love to have a place on any water up here...lake , stream...it don't matter. I can one day see us selling our property(which for most people is a "get away from it all" place too) and retire on a lake, but man those places are expensive!!

We are still in the early stages of researching. Some areas in Pa, especially those suggested by njpolker are beautiful but might be a little far for a getaway cabin. If its too far from home i'm afraid we won't use it as much. I'm going to take my time with this purchase and make sure i don't compromise on my requirements. After all, its not as easy to swap land/cabins as it is audio gear :-).
