cabin in the woods

I have been thinking (with my son's strong encouragement) of buying some land in a rural area in Pa to build a small cabin. My son and I enjoy the outdoors and he is also an eagle scout with some serious outdoor skills. We go camping a few times a year but I am thinking if we build a small but nice cabin somewhere, my wife and daughter would join us occasionally. I'm thinking about 2 hours from northern NJ so we could visit readily without much hassle. Private, easy access to fishing, easy access to main road, a decent amount of land to start with.
A couple of questions for you outdoorsman - any NY/PA areas to recommend, and for those of you who own getaways how often do you visit? Is it worth it to buy or just rent when you feel the urge to get away?
Just looking for opinions as I am just entertaining ideas at the moment.

If you don't use it at least once a month, then your better off rent-as-you-go, unless you rent it out to other vacationers as an investment.2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures

Go for it!! You won't regret it...I have had my place in Claibourne Co. in Tennessee for a number of years now. In fact I'm writing this from the back porch enjoying a mug of hot joe watching a few turkeys cruise by with not a care in the world! Effects on the soul are too cool to imagine!

Of course next week on the drive up to the cabin/shack for the annual Minnesota Deer opener, the trip is not complete with out stopping at this Cabin and a nice one at that. I can spend hours in this one, and will be doing so on the trip next week. Me and my Grandson spent 4 hours in the place on the way up to the shack this past august.Home Theater

I would just rent for now until the kids determine if it's something they will continue to enjoy. Search area's that will benefit you for years to come, a lake side cabin has lots of appeal. Once you find an area that suits you, look for the foreclosures and you can probably pick up a decent cabin for the price of a song on HD Tracks.HT SYSTEM-

My Mother and Father bought a home in North Central Pa in 1980. We kept it till after they both passed away and then sold it some years later. Sad but it really had to go.
It was north west if Williamsport Pa about an hour drive or maybe 45 miles. The town of Cammel Pa right at the bottom of the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania" Our home sat right on Pine Creek which has tremendous trout fishing. It was about 220 miles from our home in NJ to Cammel but well worth the ride. Just close enough and just far enough if that makes sense.
Now, the backwards hillbillies do not accept Jersey Jerks/Flat landers very often but took to my parents and we built a few friendships. Our home never got broken into in the 25 years or so we owned it. That is something you may want to consider during construction.
Good luck -
I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS RECORDING AND DO NOT KNOW ANYONE IN IT OR WHO RECORDED IT LOL
However most of it is taped right in front of our home, well old home. DAMN that singing/song is bad.

OMG, NJPolker, as the kids say, I was going to suggest Cammel also. I used to live about 3 hours south of there and my friend would leave a camper set up at the campground there, right by the Wagon Wheel, I think it was called. I loved fishing the Big Pine. Very cold mountain water in the springtime and beautiful rainbow and brown trout. The general store was also the post office and I think they rented out cots during hunting season. Quaint little, unspoiled place when I was there 20 yrs. ago. -

OH MY GOD
Our home is right down the road from the camp ground. Tony Campana the owner of the Wagon Wheel was a friend and also help assure no one would ever f with our home.
I learned how to properly handle a fly rod in Big Pine Creek. I enjoyed swimming or floating down the creek as much as anything.
CCNJ If you are interested in taking a look at that area maybe I can help. There are so many thing to do and yet you can go and do nothing. -

Just drop me a line and I may be able to assist you with some great advice. We still know many people in that area. If you get up there before talking with me just ask Tony or who ever is at the Wagon Wheel about my family. They will know when you say the family from NJ who lived down on the creek or crick as they say.

I love Tioga Co. Cathy and I have been to the Penn. Grand Canyon sooooo many times.
Definitely worth checking out it's beautiful area. On your way you could stop at Woolrich, PA.
The store is still there but the mills are no longer in use. Great clothing and a nice selection of
cabin style furniture.

I prefer Pendleton shirts but gotta say I bought many many Woolrich shirts when we stayed at the "Mountain House" and loved them. I'd find some nice deal on the racks in the blem section. I hope I said that right! Blem? A stitch out of place or a stain somewhere not noticeable.pumpkinman wrote: »I love Tioga Co. Cathy and I have been to the Penn. Grand Canyon sooooo many times.

The more I think about it you really have to build or buy a place up there immediately so I can come visit.
Everyone was sitting on the front porch over looking the creek which is screened from top to bottom. I walked out with my fly rod and of course waders. I didn't make one cast and had a fish. I left the water and walked up the step and to the porch with my trout. I got the funniest looks and a question. Why didn't you fish and I said I did and showed them the beautiful trout. The trout was still alive so they knew I didn't catch it earlier and was f-ing with them. hhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
LMAO still to this day. While walking to my spot I saw a flash and saw a trout hooked up to the bottom on about 3 feet of line. So I used my net and scooped it up with out making a big deal of it. Took a second or two and nonchalantly walk back to the house.
Got a beer laughing all the way to gut the nice trout. It did take awhile for me to confess but hearing everyone talk about how did that happen was well worth the little effort. I really wanted to fish but f-ing with everyone was worth the lost fishing time. -
Well, if the place is big enough, I want in too.
Last time I was there, I went out with hip boots on and was bunping salmon eggs along the bottom for about 2 hours. Caught about 5 trout. As I caught each one, I put it on a stringer attached to my belt. After two hours even the first one I caught was still swimming around in the water beside me. We had them for dinner that evening. Can't get much fresher than that.
And as far as floating goes, I never did it but later in the summer, there were often some people floating by on tubes or kayaks. The stream was easily big enough for that near that campground.
As nice as the place was, back then it wasn't heavily fished. I usually only saw a handlful of other fishermen along a one mile stretch that I fished above and below that campground.
