My setup
705 fronts
704 center
703 rears
yamaha 7065 receiver.
I found a local Adcom 5500 for $450 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/ele/4112818951.html is this a good price? Would it be better to get a 5 channel amp for this setup?
I was also looking at a new Emotiva xpa-3 but I already know what this forum thinks of that.

I have a GFA-5500 running my L/R fronts (LSi15s) along with a GFA-5503 running my center and surrounds.
I highly recommend them...
$450 is a little high. I would offer $400 and not hesitate to walk away if they don't budge."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

Ryan knows his Adcoms so I would go with his knowledge there.pretzelfisch wrote: »I was also looking at a new Emotiva xpa-3 but I already know what this forum thinks of that.
Eh we dont have a problem with Emo gear. Its better than your standard AVR. Is it better than an amp costing 2 or 3 times more, not to most of us.
But the Emo would work as well. I would also look at used amps from brands like Parasound, Rotel, etc. They may offer similar bang for your buck.
But if you get the Emotiva we dont snub our noses at you, unless you claim its the best amp around regardless of price. Then we have issues .

I have an odd situation since my wife would rather me buy new from a company then used on Craig's list or ebay.

Sounds like permission to up the budget then

Cool man then follow your gut. As long as it sounds good to you it's all good."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -

Since you have the wife's approval, get a 5 channel Emotiva XPA-5 amp and be done with it. All the speakers will have enough power to operate to their full potential, it will be a brand new with warranty amp that can be used for years with your current and any other speakers you might get in the future.
This is the practical approach to this hobby that your wife and I take. Go for it.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
A 5 channel will kick things up a bit. There are some Rotel and Parasound units on craigslist in your area. Not sure what your budget is? Also, there is a Adcom 7500 on eBay for a decent price with 2 days to go....if you want 5 channels on the affordable side...2.2 Office Setup | LG 29UB55 21:9 UltraWide | HP Probook 630 G8 | Dell Latitude | Cabasse Stream Amp 100 | Boston Acoustics VS 240 | AUDIORAX Desk Stands | Mirage Omni S8 sub1 | Mirage Omni S8 Sub2

New Rotel or Parasound would be my vote. I don't have a ton of experience with many different manufacturers but I don't think you can go wrong with either of these. A lot more bang/buck to be had in the used market though. I was a bit nervous purchasing used at first but wouldn't do it any other way at this point.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |

I have a NAD T955 that's only about a year and a half old. Not a scratch on it. I ran an full 5 channel LSi setup on it with good results. I really need to sell it before I hook it back up in my system and decide to keep it. Shoot me a pm if you'd like more info.
Why am I selling? I upgraded to an LSiM setup and feel as though I can drive them sufficiently with an HK7300 and I need to recoup some of the money I spent on the speakers.
All dependent of course on your wife giving the ok to a used purchase.
FYI: Before getting the NAD I ran an Emotiva XPA-5 and I really like it in the HT. I felt the NAD was maybe a little better (wider soundstage, maybe a tad more clarity), but it was pretty much a lateral move.

I have been Pointed to 200 or greater for an amp, Are you finding 100-125 enough. my listening position is 10 feet from the front and center.
-
I was happy with the NAD on my LSi system. I can find the time I'll try to hook it up to my LSiM's and let you know what I think. Of course I won't be comparing to a 200wpc amp, but I can still let you know my thoughts. My listening position is also about 10' away. Room is something like 13x11 with 10' ceilings. Running 703, 706C, and 702fx.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden

Took @cfrizz advice and took the easy and cheap way out to start with. I have the xpa-5 running my lsim's now. I don't hear much difference in sound quality between it and running off the yammy receiver. Maybe a little fuller in low mid base.

Well, I guess the hunt is back on this xpa 5 is causing some buzz when connected to a source so it's going back.

This is fairly normal when hooking up a powerful amp, you may well have the same problem with another amp. Get a 3-2 plug and plug the amp into that then plug it into the wall and see if the buzz goes away before you send the amp back.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

It's a little slow with emotiva email support, and the 30 day trial period is about over. I hear a lot of people say they hear no sound from their system. Leads me to think others with this type of issue have a bad unit.
