Oh, sorry, I got some bad new last night and took it out on this forum. It's true, I do highly value a nice stereo. I do IT work from home and homework, and it's gotten to the point where silence drives me insane. Music is practically like a drug to me. Not really a strong one, but it seems to keep me grounded. Like dithering on a digital recording or something. Anyways, I got pissed because I received bad news at home. I'll delete my rant.

Bahahahaha. I can't delete it. Oh, well, at least it's entertaining. You can imagine how well diatribes like that would go over in the Bible belt, where I live. They hate me here. They think I'm some kind of evil genius. Make having a nice stereo that much better. Everyone's like "Why does that jerk have such a nice stereo? Shouldn't he be getting crushed with a pillar of salt or something?"
Anyways, I wonder how long these old monitors are gonna last. I mean has anyone heard of a 50 year old speaker that sounds great? I haven't. I just know that the market has lent itself to catering to the needs of the home theater crowd, with better dynamics and SPL efficiency being the name of the game. Me, personally, I wanna here every last sound in the music. The monitors seemed like my only way to get the vocals and guitar to have that level of realism, without spending 1000/pair. So I'm keepin' 'em. I still believe that the passive radiator design is going to prevent them from ever attaining the eardrum rattling kickdrum hit of even the new Monitor series. Which, BTW, Polk, is a helluva lot of speaker for the money, but is pretty fugly, and probably not up to task in without some good EQ'ing. Still, kudos to Polk for allowing people outside the bourgeoisies experience something other than crappy 12 inch paper cones in hollow particle board boxes.

If I haven driven everybody off with my thorough and vitriolic rant, I would like to inquire about soldering. If the connections are bound by a metal that is less conductive than copper, would than not be analogous to a weak link in a chain, bottlenecking the signal with higher impedance?

Silver solder is more conductive than copper, however it's very expensive. The best solder, in my opinion, and I use a lot of it, is Cardas, Quad Eutectic. Sonicraft carries it.

I ran out of cash before I could finish working on them. I'm so elated with the the RDO 194's that I have no intention of giving up on them. I most likely won't get extremely expensive parts, but the next best thing. There's always a top tier that provides a little bit better for a small amount of gain. I woul love to have some functional RTA 12s or a couple of the massive SDA's. Getting a center channel looks to be a pain though. And I am not an expert on the interconnect cable and the tech surrounding it.

The great thing about this hobby in general, and the vintage Polks is, you can always re-visit work you've already done. The Monitor 10 crossovers are relatively easy to work on. The RDO-194s are instant gratification. The crossovers can be done inexpensively, although I'd recommend putting your money in the Hi-Pass/Tweeter circuit, say Sonicaps for example, with some fresh NP Electrolytics in the Lo-Pass temporarily. In 6 months, you could then change out the Electrolytics for some matching Metalized Polypropylenes. My SDA-2ATLs were 10-12 months in the making. Each step, as I could afford it, brought me closer to where I wanted to be.
Center channels and surround for that matter can be a PITA, with vintage front L&Rs, that's why I eventually rolled my own center, and same goes for the surrounds.

Thank you for all the info, westmass guy. I pretty much am giving you the sole benefit of the doubt by default. I will certainly defer to this later. Lovely job with the custom center, BTW. I think these RT 55s are great, I really do, but (and I'm sure this applies to the RT 55i's too) they don't sound as convincing and pleasant as the Monitor 10 Bs with the RDO 194s. Something about the damned things. I don't know if it's the MW 6503, or the passive radiator and heavy box, or what, but they are so very legit in the vocal range.

And I almost bought some fake Chanel products too. What better place to hock them than here? Clearly that's what I'm into.
