What is BTL vs normal

I just bought a NEC AV 300E and don't know how to hook up the speakers. It show BTL and normal. Then it appears speakers need to be hooked in different configurations other than just positive and negative. Can anybody bring a beginner up to speed?

    BTL=Balanced transformerless

It is an older nomenclature for bridged. Japanese manufacturers still use it. US calls it bridge mode.

In that mode, you will probably get 3X power into a single channel and you will connect the outputs to both the live (red / positive) posts of each channel instead of one live one ground as is the case in normal/ stereo mode.

    Hope this helps,

    Arif

So is done to drive a sub woofer or center channel, in my case I have fron and rear speakers, then I would assume that I can bridge to speakers. But this would make my impedance at 16 ohms?

I have no idea what you just said. ;)

With bridgeing, you make the stereo amp into a one channel powerhouse. How you use that one channel is up to you.

If you connect two speakers in series (16 ohms) and run the amp bridged, you have achieve absolutely nothing except for losing stereo.

You will lose the extra power when you connect the speakers in series...

Yeah, what he said. Take the cotton out of your mouth, put down the playdoh, concentrate, and post again.

    Ed Zachry.

Sorry, I should have been more specific, but I left my decoder ring at the office and licked WAY too many frogs laced with LSD today.

You gotta be kidding me right? Is this THREAD for real?

The NEC AV 300 to the best of my knowledge is Dolby Surround. I did not say Dolby Pro-Logic for a reason. It pre-dated Pro-Logic. I had an NEC AV 260 a long time ago. I'm thinking your 1987-88 time frame. It busted itself.

The Ed Zachery thing is a hoot too!

OK now I get it, in those days, all you had to do to get "surround" was to lift the ground off the speakers. In that mode, the amplifier would be technically running bridged.

    So it makes sense...

No, I DON'T think you get it. BUT WE'RE TRYING!!

The NEC AV-300 was a Dolby Surround PROCESSOR, with an onboard stereo power amp that could be bridged. It might have been 30-35wpc. CAPICHE?

Hey, you got a helluva lot of nerve pre-determining that if one of your "modded" amps blows up, it's because somebody abused it. No chance YOU could've made a mistake huh? I make about ten a day, and todays special, was getting into the **** with YOU. Now I ain't gonna be able to sleep, cause the theme song from the Magilla Gorilla tv show's gonna be going around in my head. So take your **** know it all attitude, AND your **** 10 day warranties, and peddle them somewhere else Slick.

    Good night ****!

It not about having a nerve or not. And yes it would be because of user error because I test the amps before sending them out.

I am not sure how technically inclined you are, but you cannot begin wreaking havoc with a soldering iron in an amp and expect it to work just fine when you are done. It just does not work like that. There are several things that can go wrong and I spend 1 to 2 hours just testing it.

It needs to go through extensive testing, this assures that the work performed is ok and the mod did not "spoil" the amp. Thats how I conclude that if it breaks after is was extensively tested, it was user error.

BTW sorry about last night, I got a little carried away with your name calling and **** that I forgot that I don't need to be a jerk if the other guy is.

Chill and enjoy this fine day.

Technically inclined, and WORLDLY enough to know that a 10 day warranty is something anybody with half a brain should steer clear of. If you can't offer a halfway decent warranty, maybe you ought to try your soldering hand at something else. Not in a FINANCIAL POSITION to offer a halfway decent warranty, then save your pennies. Your know it all attitude still sucks. User error.... HAARUMPH! If a user sends you a good, working amp (that maybe he or she has had and used for years), and then it fails AFTER your mod, what does THAT tell you?

Ha-Haaaaa! Or that all the ones that have failed (which of course, we would never hear about) were pre-determined to be user error.

You don't know me or my work, making assumptions is the mother of all f***-ups. And you are making wayy too many.

I KNOW what you are saying is worth less than the crap you write, while you are just basing your flimsy argument on a very flawed premis that I mean to take people for a ride. That assumption is wrong and slanderous and you have no way to prove it but "assuming", That my friend is not a demonstratable evidence.

I don't need the approval of jerkazoids like yourself.

As I said before, you are full of it. I do not think its worth my time to stoop low to your level and keep this rather un-interesting discussion going.

Yeah I'm getting kind of bored toying with an individual like yourself. In signing off there shlockmeister, I thought I'd add that all the USED equipment I offer for sale (and I sell a lot, in fact, the 26 x 16 room with fireplace and vaulted ceiling that I'm transmitting from, was paid for entirely by used hi-fi sales) comes with a NO QUESTIONS ASKED, 30 DAY, MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. I'm not real wealthy either, I just know what good sales practice is. YOU LOSE!!

Well, first of all, a ten day warantee is virtually worthless. Why even bother.

Second, George is a pretty well respected person round these parts. I, and many others, know for a fact that he is NOT full of it and has probably forgotten more about hifi that most of us will ever know.

Far as folks being jerks and so forth, well, you MAY know your stuff but you come across as a pompous, know it all windbag who considers his opinon as gospel. We already GOT one of those around here. If you want to hang out and share your knowledge, cool. If you want to play 'Lord of the Manor' and act like a pompous know it all. I'd say don't let the door hit you in the ****, find another outlet to pump up your ego.

I partially agree with you that a 10 day warranty is not industry standard, I just put it in the auction because I was getting wayy too many emails of people asking for it. Even without giving a warranty, I would give people full refunds or fix their stuff for free if they broke stuff they got from me. (and definitely if it was my fault.)

George may be well known and most of you suck up to that foul mouthed used car salesman. if you go back to that post, you will see who started crapping first. If you think to have the moral higher ground, why don't you re-read this post sequentially and see what kind of a guy you respect. He started crapping after I answered a guy what BTL was... I wasnt pompous, just told the guy what bridging does, all of a sudden this grumpy old guy comes and begins shouting and swearing, I kept my cool till his third abusive post.... How can you respect someone as unstable as that?

I have absolutely no respect for anyone that resorts to name calling without being provoked. I had my reasons of giving a ten day warranty, you or anyone do not have to agree with it, ... I am not shoving it down anyone's throat, the fact that i have more orders than I can handle tells me that people don't necessarily follow Lord George's lead.

What I say is not Gospel , neither is yours nor that guy you worship.

I'm curious about something here fellas.

Do you guys ever moan like Chewbacca when you move your bowels?

I find myself doing it on occasion, usually when I have a half-baked atomic loaf on deck.

It's nobodys fault but your own that you're not having fun here. I'm having a blast. Nobody worships me you fool. They just know a line of **** when they heareth one. My DAUGHTERS would know better than to line up for a ten day warranty, AND THEY'RE GIRLS!!!

You walk onto this forum selling a mod. Advertising a link to your e-bay thing. Lotta nerve there. THEN, a ten day warranty? THEN, if it blows it's because of abuse? Nobody knows how to work a power amp? Get out of here will you please? You are a fool. Nobody likes you. Get a dog, they are fairly impartial (although in your case I wouldn't be surprised if even a dog was particular about hanging around). Please go away. Please STAY away. It was fun at first, but now you are making a pest of yourself in ADDITION to being a fool. GO AWAY! I DON'T think anybody will buy your mod here. GO AWAY.
