disconnect the speakers just to be safe.

at the risk of beating a dead horse, I have another question. now that it has been determined that the problem is with the hafler dh-110 preamp putting a small amount of voltage into the amp; I turn on my components in this sequence--cd player, preamp, amp. doing this, with the volume on the pre all the way down, I get a small "pop" in the speakers, which I assume is not good. can I therefore turn on ; cd player, amp and then pre without any harmful effect until I can afford to get the pre fixed?

Stick to your original order. If the pre-is sending a small amount ot DC to the amp, the pop could possibly be larger otherwise.

If the pre is dumping dc voltage into the amp DONT USE IT! No gain in useing it and poss all loss , just crazy to risk other equip.

okay. points taken. since this happens during the procedure of turning the components on, is the pre dumping this stray voltage only at the onset of turning on, or is the stray voltage steady once everything is on? in other words, is it ok to leave it on until I can afford to get the pre fixed, or get a different one?

I wouldnt even have it in the system until it was checked out
.you are just asking for it to get worse and poss fry the 1200 dint screw with equip that is discharging DC untill you know what it is doing! Outside of the system.

just want to give an update on the situation. it was in fact the preamp, which is now disconnected. I run the cd player right thru the amp for now, until I can get a different pre. thank god the amp and rta12b's are okay. thanks again for all the help.

Good to hear laotzu, are you going to be looking for a used preamp anytime soon?

yes, but, as usual, it's a question of money right now. i'm kind of focused on a dynaco pas3x, or an audio research sp4.
