Adcom GFA 5500 Help

I'm an amp newbie and I'm looking for advice on how to set it up. Any help would be appreciated.Ex. Large or small? What crossover to use? How should this be connected? Do i Bi wire? Would some good old monoprice cables do the job or should I get something from the likes of Blue Jeans cable or audioquest?

Any advice or tips is welcomed!

Their is no large or small settings and no crossover. Hook up to your pre outs and mono price is just fine,and bi wire if you want to.

Bi-amping on the same amp is worthless from what I've read.

Most around here are against Monoprice and will recommend Blue Jeans at a minimum. Will Monoprice cables/wires work? Of course.

Connect the Adcom to the preouts on your Yamaha with RCA IC's.

As far as large/small goes, just run YPAO again after getting everything hooked up and let the Yamaha figure it out. I think the standard, however, is to set all your speakers to small and set the crossover point to 80Hz on all your speakers. Turn the crossover point on your sub as high as it goes before running YPAO.

How about bi wiring? Is that worth the effort? I ran YPAO and it set the front stage to large which I changed to small and then set the crossovers on the mains to 40hz and the center channel to 80hz.

If you have the extra cable, try bi-wiring.

To expound on this, Nightfall, we tend to push people away from "bi-amping" using a receiver as those units tend to have weaker power supplies shared across all channels of amplification which makes it virtually pointless.

True, active bi-amping on the other hand isn't frowned upon at all. But, the caveat being, you require 2 matched gain amps and an active crossover to do it right.

Nothing, don't sweat it man. You clearly stated it was from " what you have read".

That said, and before this escalates out of proportion, Glen was eluding to the fact that you can't believe everything you read....including here. Heaven knows, some bad advice has been doled out here too but that's neither here nor there. Glen also eluded to "speaking from experience" is the best which it is but in no way assumes your opinion isn't valid, which it also is.

BTW, the OP is asking about bi- wire/amping from an amp, not a receiver. At least that's my take on it since he was asking about the Adcom 5500.

Just a quick update fellas. I did not bi- wire/amp. I did get some new IC's from Audioquest and I couldn't be happier with the amp. Thanks!
