Does anyone have recipe for homebrew cabinet dampening materials or paint ons ?
years ago I redid a set of Genesis 2+, and painted the insides of the cabinets with a product
called 'silent running' it is used on engine compartments to reduce vibration../ noise
I received a gallon for a very moderate price..
but now it is $150/gallon
any ideas ? rubber cement with birdshot ?

Clay, lead sheeting....stuffing from old pillows, pink fiberglass insulation to name a few.--Gary--
Onkyo Integra M504, Bottlehead Foreplay III, Denon SACD, Thiel CS2.3, NHT VT-2, VT-3 and Evolution T6, Infinity RSIIIa, SDA1C and a few dozen other speakers around the house I change in and out. -
Are you trying to add mass to the cabinet walls, or just damping material in general?Home Theater/2 Channel:

Blackhole and other foam options seem very expensive imo (i'm not being cheap)
But the silent running seemed to work well, and did add a little mass to the cabinets...
Just want to duplicate the blackhole soundsheet effect* The Trouble with Doing Nothing , is that you Can't Tell if you are finished * -
What speaker are you using them on? You can over do it with Blackhole type sound deadening products.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I don't think you'll come close to duplicating what Blackhole does with something that you paint on. Bite the bullet and get some - $60 for a sheet big enough to do several pairs of speakers. Remember, you don't cover the whole inside of the cabinet. You use a 4"wide strip on the back wall across from the MW. Some folks also put a strip on each side wall."Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer -
I've used the rubberized with rubber pieces non-slip coating before on driver baskets. It wasn't expensive, but didn't work as well as the purpose built stuff either after two coats.

Second Skin makes very well respected products in the car audio/show car/hot rod community. Not sure how well it will work for an enclosure but call them to see if it will work. Their Spectrum coating is $68.60 Gallon: http://store.secondskinaudio.com/spectrum/
This company I have never heard of, ACRY-TECH Coatings but the Acoust-X Sound Damping is $26.95 a gallon:
