I wish there was more empirical research on the matter.

There is. Just that the device used to make these determinations, ears, all vary to some degree. Thus you get the array of opinions.

I am not a rich guy so I don't have the money to buy high end cables, neither does my setup require high end cables either. RTi-8, CSi-5 and Sony 5700ES receiver. (don't bash it unless you have had a listen)

Here is what I use http://www.we-supply.com/browse.cfm/jsc-12-awg-professional-speaker-wire-per-foot/4,2679.html I solider the wire to GLS locking banana plugs.

Connection is the key. By soldering the wire to the banana plug on both ends I have the best solid connection possible
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Going to have to disagree with ya pal. While connection is important, it's not an overriding factor. Soldered ends ? Works fine except your probably using some sort of tin based solder....which is bad. I guess when it comes to cables, how it sounds is the determining factor for most, regardless of what connections, metallurgy, design is used.

$1 for tin $4 for silver, I only use silver for audio.
