Technics SL-1100 reborn....

About a month or so ago I splurged on a Technics SL-1100. It already had a Shure V15T3 cartridge installed. I accidentally broke the stylus while cleaning it up so I ended up buying a new one. I have tube amp and preamp and figured that someday I'd like to buy a tube phono preamp but before spending big money on that item I did buy an ART DJpreII phono preamp. The dust cover had a big gouge on the bottom of the top surface that looks like someone knocked it off the turntable base and the platter or LP edge ground that groove in. I spent about 40 hours sanding and polishing the cover. It does have swirls but too be honest now the TT looks pretty good for being 41 years old. To make sure the platter motor ran OK I powered it up and ran it for about 8 hours non-stop in 33 and45 RPM mode. It runs just fine. I have about 300 LP's. Unfortunatf the plastic containers are cracked and the basement flooded. So out of all those LP's about 25 are OK. There is that typical hiss and pops and clicks. Seems most of them have a spot where the stylus skips. I do have it set to 1.25 grams as specified by the info I found.
Despite the fact that I can hear how much better vinyl sounds with the depth and presence...as long as the vinyl is good I think for me CD's and high quality FLAC files are what I'm going to stick with.
So that being said I'm thinking of selling it. I don't have enough posts to list anything in the Buying/Selling thread.

It is work cleaning records thats for sure. Do you have the cart. Alligned properly? I think you should run it a bit heavier at 1.5Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's.

I could have sworn I saw 1.25 grams as the recommended tracking force...though 1.5 grams may help prevent the skips. I'll give it a shot.
Though as I said I may end up selling it seeing as how maintaining LP's is a chore I'm not sure I want to take on....though I may try washing one LP to see if its worth the effort. -

If memory serves, I owned the V15 type V, the tracking force depended on whether the front "Dynamic Stabilizer" brush was in the down or up position. The brush subtracts .25 grams when in use. So if your Type III is equipped with the brush, and it's in the down position, then 1.5 grams is correct. If not, then 1.25 grams is correct.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Done one what? Do you think I was referring to just doing one turntable?
I was referring to LP records. I have perhaps 275 LP's to try and recover from flood damage which would require me to peel the sleeve that's stuck to the vinyl, then attempt to wash offs he vinyl. I'll bet only 10 to 15% of the LP's will be in a listenable condition.
For all that effort I think it's a waste of time. -
Good luck selling when you get 26 more posts.... No I knew you were referring to cleaning LP's. It's part of the process if you don't like a little effort to enjoy your music then you get what you get. This refers to reasonable vinyl with some wear not salvaged from the bottom of a flood. That pile is gone, get over and move on.2-ch System: Parasound P/LD 2000 pre, Parasound HCA-1000 amp, Parasound T/DQ Tuner, Phase Technology PC-100 Tower speakers, Technics SL-1600 Turntable, Denon 2910 SACD/CD player, Peachtree DAC iT and X1asynchorus USB converter, HSU VTF-3 subwoofer.

Well....After trying to clean just one and seeing how much time and effort there was to perform the task only to find that the annoyance of the clicks and pops and hiss were there I was able to conclude that it's probably not a viable option to continue. I think most people have the ability to come to some sort of educated conclusion such as that. I'm sorry it seems you don't have that abilty.Good luck selling when you get 26 more posts.... As I previously stated to me it really isn't worth the time or effort. It wasn't just a 'little' effort. Your ability to come to conclusions and express those opinions in the way that you did that say pretty much what I said 3 or 4 replies ago thinking that it was going to add value to the thread is mind boggling.
Though the one benefit of responding back to comments such as yours does help with getting my posts closer to that 100 count...though in reality I bet I'll have it sold on any one of the numerous other forums I like to read will make these posts kind of useless.
It's members like you that make following this forum a pain. Sarcasm or attempting to talk down to people isn't a benefit. Though I am grateful to the members that did encourage me to consider LSiM 703's over RTiA 7's for my application.

Sometimes i reread & process feedback. It may be taken the wrong way. On most forums i notice alot of advice. Good or bad. Agree or disagree. Ive learn not to take it personal....sometimes it may be worded in a different form & that we may take it the wrong way....it may not be ment as sarcasm--..

Too harsh? Maybe. For the name calling I apologize. The sentiment is the same however for obvious efforts to bypass the for sale section. I expressed my opinion- that is all. We all have one and I can be an a$$ at times. Life goes on. Enough threadcrapping, I'll end it here. Gonna agree with TN here.
Any vinyl that has been exposed to a flood is 99% unrecoverable to begin with, and it has never been the lazy way to enjoy music. Yeah? So? That still doesn't mean I want to sell it. There is that word 'think' in the sentence. I know reading comprehension probably isn't taught as well in schools these days but that doesn't mean I meant anything more than what I wrote. Before you all start jumping the gun and accusing me of doing something wrong or unethical it seems perhaps your actions perhaps reveal what you may do or think you can get away with.
Quite frankly I happened to find a place I can get a good phono tube amp preamp kit. I'm thinking I may actually supplement my CD collection with new LP's.
Like I said in my first post I was only thinking of selling it...that doesn't mean I want to. I think you all were thinking you need to be forum police and you thought you were going to make a bust. Does that get you some kind of reward? Geeze. -
I must admit Sprag, I would be pretty upset myself, had I lost a collection like that to a flood.
It would be hard for me to even talk about, let alone take some backlash over it.
I will admit, and anyone that knows me can attest, I would be pretty sensitive myself to comments.
Hopefully, you can get a better collection in the future, and stick with what you like.
I would suggest as you mentioned, the digital may be the way to go.
Hell vinyl itself is all involving, care, cleaning, adjustments, storage, ect.
But that is alot of the "fun" of this hobby for alot of people, not to mention the SQ, so it is worth it to alot of people I am sure, just not me.
Sorry to hear about the loss, I think it really sux!Testing

Sprags,
I've got a pretty good record cleaning setup, if you want to send those 25 records to me I'll clean them up, no charge. Send me a PM if interested.

Nooshinjohn...just noticed you have over 11,000 posts here....which I take it means you are probably at some sort of moderator level ...or at least on good terms with them. Tell me....since you think the 'meds' remark seemed to be a judgement call on your part. Do you have a life? Do you venture beyond a 10 foot radius away from your computer? Member since November 2008. Roughly 4.666 years...11,349 posts...comes out to 6.6 posts per day. Do you really think you have something worthwhile or contributing enough to have that many posts? Do you do anything besides hang out here everyday? Do you play golf? Hunt? Fish? Ride a motorcycle? **** girls (or boys for that matter)? Who does your laundry and cooks your meals?
If you are disabled and cannot do any of those things forgive me...I guess I can see how living in this forum might be the only thing for you to do. But...the only reason I'm ranting is because I was accused of something that is perceived to be unethical by this forum when in fact I did no such thing. Yet because I won't back down it seems to be ok to make claims that I'm dishonest, off my meds, or an idiot...when in actuality...all I'm seeing is that in all of you.
Since you have 11,349 posts you must be some kind of leader in this dictatorship...
It's such a shame that you don't seem to have much of a life ...a real shame.... -

KennethSwauger: Thanks for the offer...but I'm going to have to put that on hold. Three months ago I was laid off and found and refurbished the turntable to keep myself busy. However, as of today I was offered a job up in the Chicago area which is where I was born and raised and I need to get ready to make the move. Looking forward to it since its back in the Aerospace industry which is where I've spent most of my career. That plus being close to friends and family will be nice.
So it looks like my LP restoration...if possible ...will have to be put on hold.
Thank you for the offer though...Blake -

Well that is cool that you found a good job Blake, won't be anytime and the music collection will be back on track!
After my long journey in this hobby (I still like to tinker with stuff), it basically all boiled down to the music for me at least.
Congrats on the new job!Testing
