dac chipset

anyone know any thing about this dac chipset? Texas Instruments PCM1796 24 bit/192 kHz. how it sounds. how it compares to other chipsets?

    Some would say it is dated, and it was a lower output chipset compared to newer BB offerings. However it was and remains a good chip set. It was used in some flagship DVD/SACD players. It will even play raw DSD (SACD). How it sounds depends on the circuit design and quality of components. Power supply, circuit design, output type, op amp quality, etc, all affect sound output.

    What DAC in particular are you looking at? DAC's are usually built to a price point, and sometimes modding can make a decent DAC into a better one. I had a Music Hall 25.3 with PCM1796 that sounded pretty good, even better after modding.

    My Denon DVD-5910 uses this chipset. It sounds pretty good, but as Rich said, it will depend on the rest of the circuit it's used in, and more importantly the analog output stage used with this chipset. I recently modded my DVD-5910 to output DSD directly to my DAC I built (using the ESS 9018 (Twisted Pear Buffalo II)) and a tube output analog stage (SRPP) and it definately blows away the DVD-5910's PCM1796 DACs and analog output.
