Polk monitor 10 ?

Hi I am a newbie here I have a chance to pick up a mint all original set of monitor 10s with the peerless tweeters. The wanted 300$ I've got him down to 200$ is that still to much??? What do u guys think? Thanks jason

That's not too much provided they are in good condition and fully functional. Peerless much harder to find as well. Actually I think its great price.

Good to hear that thanks I'm running cerwin at-15s at the moment with a jolida tube amp but I also have a pioneer sx1250 and a sx939. I keep hearing from everybody to go with these or hold out on a pair sda2. Any thoughts about the cerwin sound vs the Polk sound?

Have had my Polk 10's since 1979 when I purchased them new. Recently had the crossovers recapped and they sound great.

I listen very loud alot how are these when u hit them with the volume ?

The CV's will produce much much more kick for the same power and achieve higher SPLs. The sensitively is 102 dB and max output is 127 dB. They get down to 28 Hz -3 db. Great party speaker and great for sonic impact.

The 10's sensitivity is 89 db and the require more than 16 times the audio power to produce the same output as the CV's and will not match the 127 db peak output. The don't dig as deep at the CV's, 37 Hz -3dB. I have not compared them side by side but I venture to say the 10's, sound more composed and smoother at normal levels. I don't think you will be happy if you want a very LOUD speaker and are used to the CV's.

I use Monitor 10A's in my shop system, and love them. You can "Sweet Home Alabama" then and "Turn it UP! I have a Carver TFM-55 hooked up to mine. Just make sure your amp has enough quality power. Not having enough power and driving into clipping is one of the most common ways people destroy a set of speakers.

Sounds like a great deal; I play mine VERY LOUD from time to time. I recently replaced my tweets (RDO0194) and rebuilt the XO, but you would want to keep the peerless (I did on my Monitor 4's).

$200 is on the high side for 10's even with Peerless.
I sold mine for $150 and that's also after waiting few weeks.

i found a pair of sda2 on cl about 3 hours from me he wants 450$ obo.i ask him to make me a little video and he quit repyin to me lol he said their in basment not hooked up but work great lol. being as i am used to cerwins everybody says polks are more musical better image and soundstage.at the moment i have cv dx9s at15s dx7s d3s really the only 2 pair that are not over the top on highs are the at15s and d3s. i cant say im a true cerwin fan this is what was in my face when i was young now im looking for better vintage speakers.i ike more than just rock music.i just got a pair of 850$ mini monitor kirksaters and im not im pressed very much lol. so im sti huntig for ideas where to go nxt so i figured id try polks.

should i be looking for a diff model if i like to crank it? im using a 60wpc jolida tube intergrated atm but i have a pioneer sx1250 and sx939 also so i do have some power to play with.but dont get me wrong i like it loud but it needs to sound good in all aspects too.the cerwins get down and dirty but clarity and image are gone by that point. any suggestions

I have both Polk Monitor 10 speakers (with peerless tweeter) and SDA 2B TL speakers. I paid $150 for the Monitor 10s. $200 is a little high but they are great speakers and, if they are in mint condition, I'd say they are worth it. I thought the Monitor 10s were the greatest speakers in the world....until I got the SDAs. The SDAs are in a whole other league. My recommendation is to get a pair of SDAs if you can. But I think $450 for a pair of SDA 2Bs is on the high side. I paid $475 for my pair of SDA 2B TL speakers but paid more because they already had the TL upgrade. But, SDAs are well worth it.

But the best advice is to get both Monitor 10s and SDAs!

Listen I am a long time Cerwin Vega D7 user. I had them from new for 25yrs. I replaced the CV tweeter a few yrs after i got them for a Peerless model that had replaceable voice coils a much much better tweeter. I always got ear fatigue after a few hours. I like to "feel" the music so I understand you, BUT you can't abuse Polks like you abused the CV's that is a FACT !!! I will say that I can do without the LOUDNESS now because the Polk SDA's I have (2pr) are in fact much better at EVERYTHING Image,articulation and true bass not that exaggerated CV bass. Personally you must make that distinction as I will not go back to CV for any reason.

Ps. I hope I don't have to turn in my PF card because of this revelation:eek:

Just my opinion. But $200 for 10's seems high to me as well. If you are gonna spend that kinda of money put another $100-$150 with it and look for some SDA's.

i have like a 20 by 20 listening area im afraid its to big for the 10s. but have not heard them either

My listening room is about 16x24 with vaulted ceilings. Although my 10's sound better in a smaller room, better bass. They can sure fill this room nicely with sound!

Yes. I grew up with the big CV's and I can tell you are the kind of guy who wants it loud and wants to feel it. A speaker with a 15" ported woofer and 102 dB efficiency absolutely trounces the 10's with their pair of 6.5" drives and a 10" passive with respect to the volume of air moved per watt or at the peak SPL.

If you drive the CVs at 60W peaks, you would need 960W into the 10's to equal the SPL. The 10's would vaporize and puke the cones. I have a great pair of 10A's (paid $75) and they are nice speakers but not for what you expect.

ok i get that the 10's are prob not what i want. what polks can take some power and sound good then? the sda series ? give me some options lol i hear all good things about vintage polks there have got to be a pair that can give and take lol?????

Depends on your definition of good. CV's never sounded that good to me because they are from an era that valued high SPL and hard hitting bass when powered with a 40 watt receiver over musical nuances, sound stage and accuracy. Think CV, think disco.

if u read my earlier post i said that is what im used to.. i am open to new stuff. this is what i got. out of all my cerwins i said only 2 pair even sound decent to me.plus i just got a pair of kirksater silverline 60s they are a diff world than the cvs.amost to fake sounding so yes i play loud but i also like good sound.and i havent achieved that yet.thats why im here asking for advice.so i am very open just cause i have cv's dont make me that disco college kid.i have been told by the head producer and friend johnny sandin of capricorn records to get large advents.im just trying to find all my options vintage and good detail image soundstage im not worried about thumpin bass or efficiency im worried about good sound that can take a little drive when needed.ive read that sda dont even open up till u put 80 watts to them.so lets see if i can get some advise instead of being that CERWIN GUY lol

Well I already suggested you looking for SDA's. Where are you located?

Also the 10's can take a fair amount of power. Add a powered sub to them if you want more bass.

The Monitor 10s are great speakers (I still love mine) but it is best to get SDA speakers. They will amaze you and are a world above and beyond the Monitor 10s. They are speakers for life. At least my SDA 2B TL speakers are lifers to me!

If those Monitor 10s are truly "Mint", then $200 is a steal of a price. My 10Bs that I bought new (one of two pairs) in 1989 spent more than 20 years in their original packaging prior to my getting them out for daily use about a year and a half ago. They look showroom new and sound better than new with the upgrades I've done on them - new RDO194 tweeters and all other suggested upgrades/mods short of re-doing the crossovers. I've been offered considerably more than $200 for them and they're still here.

I'd grab the 10s, Jason, and see how you like them. I'm quite confident you'll be very pleased. They are about the easiest listening, non-fatiguing speaker pair that I've ever heard. Then you can get some SDAs later once some become available in your area. In the meantime, you can shed some of those CVs to finance the SDAs and the requisite mods/upgrades. I have SDA-2BTLs too and getting the right pair and right deal is something that can take some time. The 10s will let you know if you like the Polk sound or not.

Also, if you decide the 10s just don't do it for you, you won't have much trouble getting what you've got into them back. Just check what the nice ones are going for on ebay - lots of mint pairs are going for from the high $200s to lower-to-mid $300s plus $100+ for proper shipping. Truly minty ones are getting harder and harder to find too.

Well....probably the VMPS. Or the RTA12C's. The guy in Southbend might have something you would like. Klipsch speakers, that are listed in that link, are another option. Although to me, much like Cerwin-Vega speakers. I do not care for Klipsch that much either.

The Thiel's and Advents in the last 2 links. I am not sure about. Just interesting speakers.

Maybe not. His CV's peak at 127 dB. The Kappa's make 113 dB at 256W (250W is their max power)
