SoundBar 5000 Bluetooth Problem

The instructions on connecting to the sound bar with bluetooth are pretty clear in the manual, but when I set the source to bluetooth and scan for devices the soundbar does not appear. This has happened with both a galaxy s4 and a nexus 4. Is it a bad sound bar, or is there something I am missing?
