The Denon is a decent bluray player. I wouldn't hesitate to put it in your main rig. I own the Denon dbp-2012 and really like it. The picture quality for bluray is better than my Panasonic and Sony bluray players and D/A converter is excellent. I would have bought the 1611, but I needed the 7.1 channel out to run to my older Denon receiver. If you are a huge Denon fan, go for it. If brand doesn't matter, Oppo is probably the way to go. This unit is more than serviceable. Is it the best? no, but it does a great job.

Might check me on this but I believe that unit may not be as strong in the analog output section as some of the earlier Denon universal players (ie DVD-2900 and DVD-2910). It is internally identical to the Marantz UD-5005 from what I understand. I actually have the Marantz unit but have not used the analog outs yet to compare with my DVD-2910.

The 1611 still uses Burr Brown, does it not? I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the differences between the 2910 and the Marantz.

Just checked marvda's gear. Wow! The Denon does seem to be a little beneath the other gear. The Oppo is definitely the best for the price if you don't mind getting used equipment.

ok, i've run into some negatives on the denon. looking at teacs now with maybe trickle down technology from the esoteric line.

I realize the dac chip is only part of it, but it is a good chip as well as a good place to start. What other "parts" do you consider weak? Not trying to be argumentative, just educate myself as I don't recall a lot of talk about the Denon blu ray line on this forum. Marvda, what negatives have you come across? Not a fan of the Teac, but it is all about synergy and personal taste. See if you can get your hands on the Teac and the Denon and do a side by side comparison on your gear. Sounds like a fun Saturday afternoon!

The 1611 is not worth 500. It is a 2 year old model and the new 1713 is the same price. I own the 1713 and have owned the 1611. I have a seperate dac and think the 1713 is good as a transport with an external dac. It is decent dac in it but it really came to life in my system when I hooked it up to my peachtree idac.

the negatives were mostly on the dvd firmware end, don't know how this would effect the cd part.
    which teac models were discussed?

I'd garner that your system deserves better if its going in you main rig. You can get a used Oppo-83SE in the same price bracket.
+1 on the Opp-83SE, or even check out the Oppo 103.

Oppo, Marantz, or even the Pioneer elites do a great job with SACD.
