Repair Onkyo 805

my 6 year old receiver finally took the hdmi crapper that most other Onkyo's do, just wondering if I should fix it for the $260 united radio wants or use it for my boat anchor, what do you guys think?

That's not the price to replace the board, it's to repair it... Onkyo wants several hundred for a new board. If you are competent, you can fix it yourself. You have to replace the caps on the board. The caps dry out as they are rated for only 85 degrees and the baord gets super hot, causing them to fail. Go to AVS Forum for more info, or google HDMI Onkyo failure.

Although I do not have the skills to do this, evidently most Onkyo HDMI failures are due to capacitor failures as described in this repair video on the TX-SR606. Not sure what differences exist between 805 board and the 606 but I doubt they are that different.

The fix is actually NOT that expensive if you can do it yourself. And all Onkyo had to do was PUT BETTER grade, HIGHER temp caps in there to begin with in order to address those failures...but they were JUST TOO CHEAP to do so!

You may want to heck out a place like accessoriesforless and see what factory refurbs they offer
Not sure if I would spend much on a 6 yr old unit when you might getaway current refurb for a bit more

That was my thinking, not worth that amount to fix. I don't have any soldering skills, so I shipped it to their auth serv center. It's just been such a great performer for 5 years, I hate to think it's a total loss. Oh well, anyone need a paper weight?

The display light went out on my 805 and I plan to operate on it soon. Supposedly it just needs a new resistor. You might be able to sell your's for parts and get some cash. I know AVS has a dedicated thread for the 805.

How does a display light on that go out so SOON? I have an old Kenwood AVR that was bought in 1990 that I still use outside that STILL has a FUNCTIONING display. 23 years! Those panels last a LOOOONGGG Time! Or are supposed to!

My Pioneer is 10 years old. No problem there, either!

Technology in audio equipment is changing too fast for manufacturers... They have to come out with new circuitry to deal with different HDMI versions (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.3a, 1.4 etc), new decoding formats (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, Dolby True HD, DTS, DTS HD Master, Neo, PLIIx, you get the drift).

Then there is the multitude of video chips, HQV, Marvell, Faroudja, ABT, etc), the DACs (Cirrus Logic, ESS, Burr-Brown, Wolfson). All the component makers must create the parts, make sure it is bug free (it never is). Blu-Ray players must be updated often to compensate for different Java languages.

Every year, the hardware in the AVRs must be completely redesigned on new parts that have not been released, hoping that it will work on release. Implementing the latest and greatest is not cheap. They have to cut corners somewhere, and sometimes it bites them in the a**. They think something should be fine and when it doesn't, you have the problems like Onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha and others all have.

It's a lot different than your 1990 Kenwood AVR which only has Dolby Digital and s-video outputs.

be careful... i think there's a solder joint that has to be joined before removing the board... It's near one of the edges and is labeled...

I had an 805. HDMI-3 started failing. I replaced EVERY cap. I am good with the soldering iron. Unfortunately, the re-cap job did not help.

I think the 805 fails in other ways (unlike the majority of Onkyo receivers).

If I were you, I'd just use the optical/coax inputs and buy an external HDMI switch. You give up the lossless audio, but gain reliability. I made the mistake of selling mine and forked out a bunch of money for a new Yamaha A3010. It doesn't sound any better than the Onkyo used to, and guess what...the HDMI failed on it too! Its under warranty, but it doesn't give me a lot of faith long term.

HDMI is just not a very reliable interface. Too sensitive.


I wish I would have kept my 805. Selling it turned out to be a nightmare too.

As stated, many of the issues are with bad caps. If you don't think you can fix it try to find a local tech that can give you a good price on replacing the caps for not too much money..maybe one that does side work. If that does not fix it then it might be a hard choice to spend more on it.

Myself, I'm set on getting one of the older used Pioneer SC units. I had a line on one an SC-25 for $450 shipped HOWEVER I tried to pick up this 805 unit for $150: http://charleston.craigslist.org/ele/3820539798.html...but the guy did not want to ship. Would have been the most BANG for the buck for my needs. On the flip side...if I already had an 805 I would have a hard time spending $260 on a repair plus shipping cost given the stuff that one can find in the used market. However, I have a slight advantage.... I'm a tech and can do minor repair work....however, I have a couple of RT3000p amps that are kicking my butt! Been replacing parts left and right. I may have to have someone better look at them. I think they boards are bad which is what Polk told me they have seen....they tend to crack real easy. So...sometimes repairs are simple...not so much other times.
