My 4.6 Adventure

I've decided to rework my 6.1 system to a full 7.1. I had planned on using my Monitor 7s as surrounds, with My 5s as rears. The 7s are just too sweet to relegate to surround duty. I decided to look for another pair of 5s. I had already decided against the Monitor 4s since there would be no way to timbre match the tweeters with the 5s, my 2ATLs, and my Custom Center. While perusing eBay, I stumbled upon these Monitor 4.6s. I had only seen these once before in a CL add that was just too far to travel for. They were in near mint condition, and I put in a bid, and got them. What I liked about them, is the SL2500 Tweeter. When I received them, they were even better looking than the photos, barely a scratch, and perfect grills. When I hooked them up, I couldn't believe how nice they sounded, rivalling my recapped and upgraded 5s. The bass wasn't as deep as the 5s, since the have the 8" PRs, but still very nice, and balanced. I decided to do a full rebuild. The only real disappointment I had with them was the push connectors. Those had to go. I had some Parts Express Binding Post Cups that matched up perfectly. Sonicraft was able to custom match two 13.5uf caps for me, and a couple 0.5 ohm resistors. The holes were enlarged, the new Cups were soldered onto the crossovers, and the new caps and resistors installed. The crossover assembly was weak to begin with, and after the Sonicaps went on, the weight hanging off the two solder tabs concerned me. I found some semi-ridged packing foam, and tucked it under each crossover, with a dab of glue to hold it place. The woofer magnets were glued with Loctite, then Dynamatted. The front cabinet openings received Hurricane Nuts, and final assembly with new Black Oxide S.S. Machine Screws went smooth as silk. These puppies sound amazing for their size. These will be used as the rears in my 7.1, with my 5s to the sides. These must have been the "Last Hurrah" for the Monitor 4s. I have to believe few were made, or those who own them don't want to part with them.
