Indeed. Who are these people.going to answer to? We do hold the power to boycott their products. Maybe send a clear message that we care about American business and how it affects all of us

As an aside, I work for the USDA FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service).
This has no impact on where the meats will be coming from. It won't change the inspection requirements and it will not mean that suddenly the meat on your table comes from China.

But I digress. It is still disgusting to see American companies selling to Chinese firms and then to watch the government stand by and claim that it is good for the country.

Interesting how many people are upset when a junk food manufacturer is bought by a Chinese company, but could care less about manufacturing and engineering jobs being outsourced to China, and other countries. That has a much bigger negative impact on this country than who happens to own a business.

Certainly upset about that as well. Been going on for years. Again, selling out our country and its people for a profit. These people have no honor.

From a safety standpoint, they're still under USDA's food safety-inspection service, so I don't think that's an issue," he said.

Tom Sauermilch, an attorney and senior partner in the mergers practice at McDermott Will & Emery, says the deal should be easily approved by regulators "unless the process becomes politicized.

There is a chance to stop this buyout before it's too late. Shuanghui's bid to buy Smithfield must be approved by an interagency council called the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. Your members of Congress can influence the decision of this committee, but they must act quickly. Ask your members of Congress to investigate and stop this Chinese buyout of Smithfield before it's too late.

Ask them to stop it.....why exactly ? What reason would I give them ? Just because it's a Chinese firm ? Would it make a difference if it was a British company buying them ?

My problem doesn't sit with the Chinese wanting to buy them, it sits with the company selling it to them. Now, granted they should have a right to sell to whoever they deem worthy, but somewhere along the line a company has to ask if it's the right thing to do and not just base everything solely on a few more cents per share.

Absolutely Fox....spot on. Thing is some of these companies who do a lot of outsourcing are the darlings of the country. This also tippy toes into the political realm so lets leave it at that.

That's how it is in the world, it's always going to be about how much profit a company can make for its shareholders..
It's either made somewhere else at a cheaper cost to maximize profit, or it's made locally and over priced for the average Joe..
But in the end it's all about the all mighty dollar..regardless of how it can affect people, whether semi dangerous, or hidden dangers..

Yeah, this is crap. Not forcing people to put if the product contains GMO's or not is not good for the consumer. Of course we all know the reason why they are not forcing it. There are so many products that now contain GMO's that it would make way too many people stop purchasing the products. Why do you think so many people are becoming alergic to and/or getting celiac's disease when eating gluten (wheat) products? Genetically modified wheat would be my first guess.

Also, eventually, the USDA standards will probably be "upgraded" to a "global standard" in order to accomodate so much imprting/exporting to and from countries. Also, it will probably no longer be required to put the country of origin of the product on the package for the same reason. Can't wait for that.......

USDA standards can be and has been bought and paid for so I personally don't put too much weight on their stamp of approval. Look, these are all government agencies, of which a certain trust level has gone into the crapper over the years.....even more so today. The key ingredients for me anyway amounts to having choice and information when it comes to the quality and availability of the food chain. I would stick toothpicks in the eyes of anyone or anything that gets in the way of that. You the consumer needs to make those choices and can only do it by the amount of info labeled. Any attempt to limit that info is an attempt to limit your choices and I'm not down with that.

True...true, find me a food that isn't though. Unless it's grown organically, local, that's going to be tough to find. Even the garden soil you buy for your own garden has chemicals in there. Organic or not, it's almost impossible to start growing anything without assistance from chemicals.
