Armour meats and many others will belong to a chinese co. for a price of 4.7 billion

Chinese meat imports are not allowed as of yet, but a petition to allow just that was going through 7 years ago when congress stepped in and held it up, but could be approved anytime.

Remember melamine in baby formula, deadly dog and cat food, illegal antibiotics?

Chinese meat, MMM MMM good.

That was my first thought as well. I was just worried about all of the "fillers" that would be used to plump up an already overweight mainstream America. Not to mention the unthoughtful and/or illegal places those fillers would come from.

"But the acquisition is likely to face hefty U.S. scrutiny. It comes at a time when China has had serious food safety concerns, some of which have included Smithfield’s suitor, Hong Kong-based Shuanghui."

"Smithfield said the deal isn’t about importing Chinese pork into the U.S. Instead, the company says it’s a chance to export into new markets with its brands, such as Smithfield, Armour and Farmland."

"Indeed, the acquisition highlights what could be growing interest in American food by Chinese consumers. Foreign food, such as milk powder from New Zealand and vegetables from neighboring Asian countries, is prized by Chinese consumers because of the frequent domestic food safety scandals in their country."

I agree there is a couple of old fahsion Butcher shops in town where you can buy bundles of pork, beef, and chicken at a good price. I usually shoot a deer or two every year along with fish that I catch and Phesant, and duck. My freezer is well stocked. But every once in a while I got to have my spam fix what to do.

We will all buy their products because it will be on the grocery shelves. They will continue to purchase shelf position from the retailers. Also, I think this is more about exporting to the Chinese market & the growing middle class there. All we will see is the prices rise as the demand for the products will increase (ie new market in China). Globalization is awesome when you are the conqueror but the US wasted the profits & the result is before us. We got beat at our own game by the Communists.

There are plenty of direct farm-to-table options, it's a little more work and cost, however you can get fresher, healthier, meats, produce, and dairy products. Once the zombie apocalypse occurs you are going to have to grow your own food anyway.

I reckon most of us have options for very high quality meats from local organic farms; we buy all of our beef via a CSA from a fine farm in cental MA. Great quality meat albeit not inexpensive. Ya gets what yez pays for.
