I just picked up some JBL series cheap and my plan is to use them outside at parties that involve the TV ( Super Bowl etc). I was just going to use the optical out on my tv but I need a decent amp/ receiver to run them. Used preferably. I'm not familiar with integrateds. Any suggestions?

If your looking on the cheap Darla, check out your local craigslist for a used DD receiver. Many good quality receivers can be had under 150 bucks. After all, a receiver for the most part is an integrated with a tuner.

I use an old Sony DD receiver to run speakers outside and in the kitchen area by way of A-B speaker switching. Cheap, and does the job needed.

I'd recommend the same idea, my patio rig stays out in the weather all year (under a patio cover), so I stick with super-cheap/used receivers--it's quite satisfying for it's purpose. I run some Energy C-3 bookies out there, and they're holding up nicely. The yamaha HTIB receiver I have has been on duty for over 7 years!

I read that these JBLs like high current. Any receivers tend to fill that bill?

Then go old school receivers from Sansui/Marantz and the likes. That is if you don't need a built in dac of course. Still, many higher current more modern receivers can be had easily on Craigslist. I just a saw a Pioneer SC05 for 3 bones. Look at former top of the line or close to it, maybe an Onkyo 805, Integra, Yamaha Z series, etc. As you know, the higher the line of receivers, the better power they have. Also worth a mention, Outlaw 2 channel receivers or any other 2 channel receiver for that matter.

Harman Kardon stereo receiver would fit the bill. If you have an analog out from the TV, it would open up your options a bit more to NAD or an older Rotel.

If it's for outdoor parties, just get something reliable. Some of the mega $ stuff getting tossed around here is not what I would drive a non-demanding pair of party JBL's with. Nobody at the party cares about absolute sound but you, and it's not a critical listening environment anyway.

Someone claimed that some of those Insignias were an Onkyo production run. Not sure which models or what years. But Onkyo is also a cheap High Current alternative if the budget is tight. Refurb Marantz are also a possibility; accessories4less.com Jesse's selection, is, of course, first rate but a little pricey.

I was looking at these German integrateds for half price at $495

That ad is misleading. Since it has a tuner it is a receiver, not an integrated.

    Just sayin'...

(actually, the 2600 had some inherent shortcomings and most at this late date have had more or less severe power supply related issues... but it was a beefy piece of hardware and certainly looks impressive in a 1970s polyester and opera windows way)

I am not really a receiver fan, either, for serious listening. Some nice integrated amps have been built over the years (and even today companies like NAD and Cambridge - to name just a couple - have some decent ones for reasonable prices).

    DSCN3118.jpg
the late 1970s (and up into at least the early 1990s) Yamaha integrated amplifiers were very good sounding and capable amps IME and IMO... something like this CA-800 (bottom of this little stack) is a fine sounding and attractive amplifier that shouldn't be hard to find for under a C-note.
