Denon 3910 doing the funky

Here's what it's doing. I turn it on and the display reads "Dvd 3910" then turns off. The dimmer button does not do anything on remote, Batteries are fine because you can open and close the tray with it. whenever I push a button the display will come on for a second and turn back off. I've tried turning the batteries around and doesn't help.

Here's the second thing, I am using a Firefold HDMI cable, new 42" LG, the purple denon screen does not come up, in fact all it says is no signal as if it weren't plugged in at all. I do have the TV on the right input and have actually tried both HDMI inputs just for kicks and nothing. And have tried switching the cable in both inputs, nothing. it will not work with Component cables or composite cables either. I have unplugged and turned off, turned off the main power switch and reunplugged again and again and still nothing.

Please help, it started with not reading Cd's then running very loud (still does up until quitting) to this. I would replace the laser anyway so it will do Cd's again but then I have a 2800 that does that fine. Do I need a new laser? Help please.

Denons are notorious for going through lasers but this sounds like a different problem. Tried any of the Denon forums?

Running loud would indicate a spindle motor problem.

I don't think to do that. I should though huh?:)

I agree, it's the same problem I told you about last time. I put oil on it, still made noise, put more still no luck. You can get the whole motor and laser assembly for $20 online though.

Can you hear that the noise is coming from the spindle motor?

Well I agree it probably is the motor, but it could be something rubbing.

I don't think rubbing would take the display down. The noise however sounds like a motor that has gone bad, and possibly other parts as well. Personally, I think it's time to move on to something else.

If the spindle motor or transport motor are binding up because they are bad or there is something else causing one of them to bind up it could take out the logic board.

Steven Sank @ talking Dog Transducer. Steve really knows his stuff has helped me over the net to find problems on my Sony Es Cd player and locate problems on Denon stuff. Beware that he is/was a authorized Denon repair shop and just rails on Denon for the lasers they decided to used. The Denon lasers have a high failure rate and for 3$ more Denon could of used laser's that have a 1% failure rate compared to their much higher rate. As he put it to me "It's not if it's when it will fail and it will fail"...his comments. He'll get you right

Well I have considered other players and have been scared this one was going to bite the dust eventually:(

Would Marantz be good? Highly thought of right? their older DVD players that do 1080p upconverting is all I need. there are several on the Bay but prefer a player of girth like the 3910.

Have you tried disconnecting enerything except the power and see if it will read a disc?

I am wondering if it isn't liking something with your new setup (ie hdmi cable or tv).

Does the 3910 have the "Pure" function that turns off the front panel display & video output? You sure that's not engaged? Just a shot in the dark.

The 3910 does have such a function (Pure Direct) which can disable the display and the video output to minimize noise for audio only.

I've used the HDMI for about 3 months. I did try unplugging the HDMI, but I stick a DVD in and it reads it and plays it, just no picture no sound no display. I"ll have to try pushing the pure button.

YOU CAN TURN THE PICTURE OFF?? HOW IN THE WORLD YOU DO THAT?? is it the pure direct button? I'm sure it's off, my son may have ingaged it but I pushed the pure direct button and it says off.

Man I was so totally going to ask what player you went to because I knew you had two of these! Yeah I wish I could get an Oppo but like I said earlier, the one I would want is the 95, big one:)

anyways, so I pushed the pure direct button on the player, display came back and picture as well lol just a simple thing I blew up hahaha, ignorance really. because I never knew you could turn the video off. I know on a Pioneer Elite I have just has a "video off" button. of course Denon has to be complicated. thanks a bunch fellas. If this thing ever does go out it will be an Oppo though. heard too many good things about them.

Awesome! I have the Denon 1713 BD universal player. About once a week my wife calls me at work trying to figure out why MY stupid equipment doesn't work. This is usually the problem.
