SDA Effect in Recorded Music?

I was thinking would it be possible or has it been done? Basically, add the inverted phase of the right channel into the left channel track and vice versa. Would this work to cancel the crosstalk?

Google my s/n, Princeton has a similar version also, I believe they call it "true stereo" or something, carver had the Sonic hologram. What you're looking for is crosstalk cancellation, SDA's used a passive system accomplishing the time delayed signal by placing drivers physically further from the listener.

Q sound has been around a long time now. Roger Waters-Amused To Death used it. Shame it isn't used more today.

The back of my Carver C9 "Sonic Holography" processor has a decal warning the user that they have a license to use the device to play music through, but they do NOT have a license to RECORD with the unit.

My understanding, therefore, is that recording with the unit is entirely possible, but Carver would be upset if you did so. I have no idea why he'd care...but apparently he (or his lawyers) do care.

I think the operative word here would be DID care, but I think they gave up caring a long time ago.

No, I don't think so. SDA is more than just the inverted track. It's how the inverted track is ditributed. I'm sure a recording can be manipulated in some ways, but I don't believe you can get full on SDA effects with just a recording. Although years ago "Q Sound" was a technique to widen the soundstage and while it works (sort of) it sounds unnatural and gets old pretty fast because it sounds fake, IMO.

Polk's passive system is the most natural sounding of all the interaural crosstalk cancellation systems I have heard because it does not do anything to the original recording . It only removes a comb filtering distortion that is inherent in stereophonic loudspeakers. The SDA system allows spatial properties to be reproduced as they were recorded.

Thanks everyone! While agree the natural SDA has it's obvious advantages, the Q sound or other similar processed music could sound interesting through a pair of small desktop monitors. I enjoyed the Q sound, I think there is room for improvement. With all the sound processing tricks done today, I would like to see more of this.

I'm thinking about trying a reel to reel recording using the Carver Sonic Holography. It could be fun!!

Yes I have a Carver CT-17 Preamp/Tuner which had the Sonic Hologram it does not even come close to what the Polk SDA can do. So it was tried then forgotten
