    Mak060503,

How important is 3D? There are a lot of pre 3D receivers to choose from.

Agreed. However another important question is what flavor of Auto Calibration do you want Audyssey (Denon, Onkyo, Marantz), MCACC (Pioneer), YPAO (Yamaha).

I am willing to be he's somewhat familiar with Audyssey since he has a Onkyo now which would me he would want to stay in the Denon, Onkyo, Marantz field and of them IMHO the Denon's amp section is the worst IMHO, Onkyo the second worst, Marantz the best. Cost wise Marantz is the highest, Denon and Onkyo are close but the nod goes to Onkyo here.....

Pioneers deserve a nod here but only if using the ones with ICE amps, but thats a personal decision

Regarding the 717. I went from the 705 w/ multi eq to the 717 with only 2eq. Despite the lesser version of audy. The 717 is much improved in sound quality over the 705 and operates 1000 times cooler. It has a built in fan over the Hdmi board that the 705 did not. I opted for the 717 over 709 only because of hdmi board failures I kept reading about.

As I havent heard either unit I cannot comment beyond saying that the 2EQ in my Integra is IMHO FAR behind the MutliEQ XT especially as 2EQ doesnt apply any correct to the sub channel at all so you have to manually dial that in, and in addition it doesnt have nearly as many filters for the speakers as well. I dont see how that wouldnt affect the sound negatively.

Heat is an issue with many of the Onkyo's, however there is a super cheap solution lots of folks use where they take a 120mm computer fan and just put it on top the AVR to keep air moving within it, which is basically exactly what the 717 does just internal. The parts for the fan and power needed to run it is probably less than 20 bucks give or take so not as big a deal IMHO.

There are good deals to be had if you arent in a big hurry. Scour the usual sites for the brand\model your looking for and usually withing 30-45 days something will pop up. I bought a new Onkyo tx-nr809 off Amazon for $430 a couple months ago, so patience is key when deal hunting.

I have the onk 809. If you can get one for close to $430 that would be an amazing price. I paid at least $600 for one at FRY's.

+1 to all the feedback with preouts. This way, you can keep options open for future if you do decide to upgrade the speakers and need a dedicated amp. Why not spend some more and look at Marantz. They are good receiver and they have preouts. I have SR 6006 and it was pretty darn good. I liked it for its warmth. Recently I hooked up pio SC-65 and I think it is even better.

I also have an 809 and have nothing but good to say about it. I found mine on ebay for $550 I believe. Don't be in a hurry and just shop around. Find a good auction thats not seeing much action and you may be able to negotiate a deal with a seller. Has worked for me several times.

Snake - what do you think of the RTi - 12's? I had a set of RTi 8's for a couple of weeks but my wife didn't like the looks and made me get rid of them. I liked the sound though. I sold them to my brother for what I paid. My brother cranked them up with the CSI 4 center and my ears hurt for 2 days. The RTiA7's aren't bad.

I have been extremely pleased with the 12s! Although I don't have a lot to compare to, they do sound good no matter what I'm listening too ie. music or movies or games. Highs are crisp, mids are full, and the bass (with proper amplifcation) is stellar! I don't have a sub in my system yet and the 12s def hold their own in the bass dept. However, they are the biggest speaker in the RTi line so I really don't think your wife is going to like them any better. These speakers can be gotten for a great deal however!! Let me know if you need more info on them!

It is a great price... that one was one of my alternates. I'm sure you will be happy with it. Seems that there are a lot of very positive comments from the 809 group. If you want a copy of the email regarding the warranty that I got from Onkyo, just PM me and I will forward it to you.

Ha! I just looked it up and realized I bought a couple back in February of last year for a project that failed miserably. I might have to salvage one  Mak06053, it's a good fan, and I would recommend it. You can run it off the rear USB if you are not using it for other things.

That USB powered Thermaltake fan is small and very quiet and has a small speed control pot on it. I stripped off the fan guards and just double back taped it right above the HDMI board.

Do the newer Onkyos like the 709,809, and the rest of the series need fans for the HDMI?

I would suggest it just for peace of mind if you can do it. The HDMI boards heat up on all these units to some extent (which is why the 717 ,818 , etc come with fans built in now). Its 20 bucks or less to help make a 400+ AVR last longer.... not even worth stressing about before pulling the trigger on that kinda cost...

Right, I also use a dual 50mm fan on top of my 807 that blows laterally, multi speed, looks like this; http://www.buyextras.com/evavcoblfanf.html

I have a second one I use on top of my X-Box 360, that thing gets unbelievably hot.

The two fans in the 809 are under the amplifier heat sinks. They're not cooling the HDMI board effectively.

The Hdmi board is right on top at the rear. You can place your fan right above to pull air/heat away.
