Now I dont know if you can downconvert it to PCM and send it out that way or not, and I could be totally wrong, I just saw that and thought it was worth mentioning.
I see that.
Would it make more sense to
1. AUDIO: Use the stero analog outs for audio to the preamp. VIDEO: HDMI to TV
2. AUDIO: HDMI to TV, then TV optical out to DAC, then DAC to preamp. Just saw this thread title, and Oppo BDP-83 was an obvious answer.
The sony 790 would have been cheaper and beats the 83 in many area's so maybe the most obvious yes, but not the best -
Well since I already bought it,

Mine is hooked up in my HT via method #1.
I use 5.1 analog in/out and do not have a DAC in the mix.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -

Having heard quite a few Sony BDP's as sources, I'd be willing to put a hefty amount down that the 83 smokes the 790 in all things audio. That's after having its predecessor in my system.
I've had both in my system and would say the S790 detroys the 83 in many areas including audio. It definitely surpasses it in video quality for sure. I really like Oppo machines, but in this case the Sony is better; especially with streaming HD, etc.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!
