What is the best location for the surrounds in a 5.1 setup? Side or rear?

Depends if they're bipoles, dipoles, or direct... plus distance and height as sides as opposed to as rears... plus personal preference. Bottom line: try it both ways and see what you like.

All rooms, and furniture placement is different. It depends what works best in your given room,as well as the type speakers you are running, and a bunch of other things. With a little more info, room size, seating arrangement, distance from back wall, and speaker type you are using, we may be able to offer you more help.

Then they go directly in-line with your ears to either side of the listening position so you're sitting in the null between the drivers.
