LS 70s - low volume distortion

I've got an old pair of LS70s. Both speakers have an annoying raspy sound (heard particularly at low levels) coming from the upper woofer. The speakers both put out the sound at high levels, but are basically unusable because of the low volume distortion. The problem is consistent with different amplifiers and with different speaker wires.

I can identify it as the upper woofers because if I apply light finger pressure to them, the noise goes away.

Is it possible that this is a cross-over problem? Or is it the speaker for sure? Is there a way that I could check?

I don't want to order new speakers if it's the cross-over that is giving me the problem.

Thanks,

Steve

What does it sound like? A buzzing? Scratching?

My guess is a couple voice coils on their way out. If so, a couple replacement drivers are in your future.
