Thorens TD-166 MKII in NYC area

Looking for a local pickup on this one, I have no desire to ship a turntable. Way too many horror stories. I live in Stamford, CT. I'd be willing to drive a bit to meet up in the middle, or if you'd like to give it a listen first you could come by and have a listen before buying.
I bought this Thorens from Frank (UpstateMax) last summer. He had just recently had it serviced, lubed, and fitted with a Shure MX97E, and also had RCA jacks installed in place of the stock cables. I added a cork mat and turntable spikes. The plinth is back, and the bottom was also replaced by Frank with a much better wooden bottom.
It is in awesome condition, works perfectly, and sounds fantastic. I've gone all-in for vinyl once again after taking about 25 years off, and have taken the plunge for a much more expensive turntable and cartridge, that's the only reason I'm selling it.
Asking $325. PM me with any questions.

Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I have that same model turntable and am very happy with mine. Excellent price. GLWTS.

Nice table at a great price. I just bought a restored TD160 Super with the same cart and will be picking it up on Sunday. I'm planning to put those same spikes on mine from Parts Express. I'm planning to install RCA jacks also.
I'll either sell the Shure or buy a JICO SAS for it. A friend has a M97xE and I was not impressed. He bought a JICO SAS for it and I was amazed at the difference in sound quality compared to the stock stylus.Main System:

Interesting, because for a $70. I find the Shure to be mind blowing. Perhaps your friend has a worn stylus, not sure, but I find this cartridge amazing given the price. Not saying you can't do better, but I don't know that you can for that price or close to it.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I agree with you. At that price point, it's hard to beat, if at all. The carts in my signature are well above that price point, so it's what I'm used to. With that being said, the JICO SAS stylus upgrade is well worth taking the Shure to another level or two. My friend's cart was bought new and didn't sound bad, it just didn't compare with what I am used to. It sure does now though.
There is someone on another forum that may be interested in your table. I posted about your table in his WTB thread. If he gets back to me, I will PM you for your contact info. He is in Philly, but may be able to meet you in NYC, since it's only a couple of hours away. GLWTS.Main System:

Hello,
This is a copy of some measurements I did for the stock Shure M97xE agaisnt the same cartridge with the Jico SAS replacement styli:
"I've done some measurements of the original Shure stylus versus the Jico SAS replacement. The tracking force was adjusted to the same 1.25gm for both styli and loading remained the same 180pF/47k. The first measurement taken is the left and right outputs, the left for the Shure was 3.60mV and the Jico was 5.10mV. The right channel was 3.4mV versus 5.3mV this is done at 5cm/sec. Next is channel balance, the Shure was within 0.4dB and the Jico was within 0.4dB. Next is channel separation first is the left minus right and for the Shure it was 25.4dB and the jico was 28.2dB; right minus left was 17.6dB for the Shure and 24.0dB for the Jico. Then the measurements are for "tracking ability" measured in uM the Shure was given 79 and 75 for left and right, the Jico measured 80 and 79. Next is a frequency response, I'll list the frequency response for left then right channels at each frequency, Shure on the left Jico on the right:
1kHz 0.0dB 0.0dB
0.0dB 0.0dB
5kHz -1.5dB -1.5dB -0.8dB -0.5dB
10kHz -1.3dB -1.1dB 0.0dB +0.1dB
12kHz -1.2dB -1.8dB +0.5dB -0.1dB
15kHz -0.8dB -0.9dB +0.3dB -0.4dB
18kHz +0.8dB -0.4dB -0.6dB -1.3dB
20kHz 0.0dB -1.2dB -0.5dB -2.2dB
The next series of tests deal with how the tonearm and cartridge operate together. The moving mass of the arm/cartridge combination working with the compliance of the cartridge to form resonance frequencies. The Shure stylus had a vertical resonance of 10Hz the Jico was 8Hz. The lateral resonance was 19Hz for the Shure and 6Hz for the Jico. It is usually regarded as ideal to have a resonance between 10 and 15Hz with 8Hz as probably okay. Next is a dB measurement of these frequencies, with the Shure being 8dB for vertical and 5dB for lateral and 9dB and 16dB for the Jico. Here the lower the better for resonance damping. If I used the stylus brush on the Jico the vertical resonance was below measurability and the lateral resonance reduced from 16 to 11dB. I think I'll leave the brush down on my combination.
Keep in mind these are on very new styli and suspensions may not be at their optimum, I've probably played less than 10 records on both styli. This shows, in my opinion, what a wonderful phono cartridge the stock Shure is at a reasonable price and it will mate well with an AR XA. It also shows that the Jico replacement stylus increases the output level by 3.0/3.8dB left/right which should improve signal/noise performance (make sure your phono stage input sensitivity is okay with 5mV inputs). As to channel separation, the Jico is better as well as the important frequency response betwen 1kHz and 15kHz."
I hope this is helpful information.
Cheers! -

Although, the table I am getting this weekend is a different model, it looks much like yours, except for color of the base. The TD-160 Super has a walnut base. It also comes with the original cables and no RCA jacks, and no feet. I'm also paying $25 more than you are asking. I would be interested in this one if you were closer and I didn't have a pending deal. I don't think yours will last long. The only limiting factor is the local deal logistics, which mine also is. I don't like to ship TTs either. I'm selling a restored Dual 1249 tomorrow to a local buyer to make room for my Thorens.Main System:

Kenneth, that info on the stylus comparison is interesting. I noticed better detail and a more forward sounding tone on the SAS as opposed to the stock stylus. I must admit however, that when I listened to the stock Shure, it was running through a tube amp. When I listened to the SAS, my friend was using a SS amp. That could have attributed to the more forward sound. The turntable, preamp and speakers were the same for both listening sessions.Main System:

Hi Carl,
The Shure, being a moving magnet type cartridge, can have a different upper frequency response depending upon how it is loaded. Some owners prefer to raise the resistive loading from 47k to 61k Ohms. Others keep the resistive loading at 47k and adjust the capacitive part of the loading. The total capacitance of the tonearm wiring would have to be figured in for the proper loading. Some phono preamps had ways to change the loading characteristics others less so. Two different preamps will offer two different loadings.
The higher output of the Jico styli is due to a stronger magnet, I believe.
Cheers, Ken -
Kenneth, the two sessions were conducted using a recapped Yamaha C-4 preamp. The loading is adjustable, but was identical. I don't recall what the loading was set at. The only difference in the two sessions was the stylus and the power amp. Apologies to the OP for the thread diversion.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled turntable sale.Main System:

Agreed, sorry about the diversion. The Thorens combined with the Shure should be an excellent combination, well worth the asking price in my semi-humble opinion.

No worries at all, pleasure to host! Still available, probably will let it sit here for a week or so before it heads towards Audiogon.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Without a doubt. I plan to listen extensively to the Shure on my new Thorens before deciding it's outcome. Isolation cones and RCA jacks will be the first order of business. I have been told that the Sonus Gold Blue is also an excellent match for the Thorens arrm on my table.Main System:

What's the general consensus here on the best method of mounting the Shure M97xE onto a vintage Thorens headshell/arm/table ? I mounted one on my stock TD-145 a while ago and have since realized that there were probably several better ways to go about doing it. Any advice is appreciated !

Congrats on the sale Neil!
That was a great table and I'll always have a soft spot for my first TT! -
