True, but I don't know that they're doing player benchmarks anymore. Regardless, I can't imagine they've improved DVD playback that much since then, since I doubt it's a priority for them (though I would guess that any changes in DVD playback would be noted in their firmware update notes). Still, the point remains that strictly for Blu-rays, there shouldn't be a difference except in how it handles any conversion from 24fps.

This made me curious and I quickly went through the firmware changelogs and I see two potential improvements from newer firmware versions relating to DVD playback:

FW v2.20 - A [Mosquito Noise Reduction] option has been added under [AV Settings] in the control panel for standard DVDs

FW v2.50 - During BD (BDAV) and DVD playback, a technique known as "chroma upsampling" is now automatically selected based on the movement of objects within the video content and then applied to enhance images in the content.

There are also a large number of updates in general for Blu-rays and other media for both video and audio (and I understand your initial point was about DVD upscaling). I'm honestly not trying to defend the PS3. This conversation is interesting to me and being that I use my PS3 as my DVD/CD/Blu-ray player, I wish an updated comparison could be done for playback of various media types of the PS3 vs. other players. I'd buy an OPPO in a heartbeat if they weren't so expensive!

Don't want to get burned at the stake here guys, but I feel the older "fat" PS3 performed surprisingly well as a CDP.

Of course, this does not apply to the superslim model that currently exists. This is obviously due to cheaper parts.

What cheaper parts are you referring ? I thought they only took away the card readers and capacitive buttons for eject and power. And the kill switch on the back is gone. Lost the SACD support and backwards capabilities. But gained a much quieter fan, cooler running temps and support for bitstreaming DTS-HD MA. And of course the the much larger hard drive. I dont believe any quality or performance was lost. I replaced my Fat with a slim last year due to RLod and noticed no loss in A/V quality.

Well, there are those that would say any upsampling will add some sort of artifacts to a picture over displaying native resolutions. Audio wise, the same thing. Most are moving away from the upsampling of signals to componants that can play native signals.

PS3 is good for what it is and better than some entry level stand alone gear, even some mid level gear. But like all things audio/video, theres always something better out there. You just have to decide for yourself if that extra coin is worth it and you can't do that just by reading reviews. Jump in, the waters warm.

I'm referring to the 3rd generation superslim. While the fan may be considerably more quiet, the actual disc spinning sounds like a jet.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Agreed. If you are into gaming then the PS3 is a very good value. But a purpose-built BD player for around the same price probably has better components specifically for that because it would not need things like the hard drive, controllers, etc. And of course, the high end players would have even better components.

Sinister is the worse movie , sorry:cool:
I watched a blu ray the other night, Sinister, with the PS3. Picture and sound were as good as I'm accustomed to with the Sony BDP-S590 that I use on a regular basis. Feels silly using the video game controller as a remote control for blu ray, but performance seemed to be identical. Haven't tried any CDs.
