I'm not a huge gamer, I don't own a gaming system. when I have played I mostly like racing/off road games and such. I am really bored and contemplating picking one up.
I'm not looking for it to be my media player, not looking to stream anything through it, doubt I will do online playing. I'm just looking fo a systems that will be fun and keep me entertained. I don't have kids either.
I'm just looking at the pro's and cons of either I suppose. I do seem to keep looking at the kinect, but again not sure how much i would actually use that part of it.
wishy washy at best over here lol.
thanks in advance

For strictly gaming the only two factors are really any specific games available on each platform and which controller you prefer. I would start with the controller and go from there, head up to your local best buy and try both and see which you prefer. I personally prefer the 360 controller, but it's personal preference.

No online etc then it has to be a ps3 for the better looking graphics and smoother frame rates. Tons of great used games on amazon for less than $10

I was about to post the EXACT same thing as AsSimIlAted (or whatever), except I prefer the PS3 controller (but that's irrelevant here). For the casual gamer with no real preference in games, the controller will always be the deal-breaker. Find one you're comfortable with and go with that one. Otherwise, you're just going to hear from a bunch of people recommending the systems they currently own.
"Not on Club Polk!!!" you say. Yeah... believe it.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -

This is not entirely true across the board. There are many games that look a smidge better on one system than the other (and visa versa). Generally, the difference is negligible.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Look at a game like gta on the xbox and tell me it does not look dreadfull and then check out the ps3 version. Pretty much all ps3 games are wayyyyyyyyyyyy better. Controllers dont mean a thing, you can use a ps3 pad with an xbox and vice versa

PS 1, PS2,PS3 all three systems have been bulletproof for me. I have never tried Xbox. No need to. PS3 just came out w two new systems red 500 GB. Or White 500GB system. If you can wait, I would recommend it. I believe that both the new PS4 and Xbox systems are possibly coming out this year.

Personally I'm in the xbox camp, but that's mostly due to the xbox live features which won't be of much assitance to you. Honestly for most people it's a wash between the 2, if you don't have a bluray player that might be a good reason for a ps3. Otherwise it really just depends on what system has the games you want to play.

Ummm... you might even call me a PS3 fanboy. Trust me. I greatly prefer both the controller and the PS3's exclusive titles (such as God of War, Dark/Demon Souls, and a few others). Many can say the EXACT same thing about the 360 (Halo, Gears of War, etc.).
However, saying the graphics look "wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better" is absolutely ridiculous and bordering on trolling. GTA may look a *bit* better on PS3, but trust me.... there are a few games that look a *bit* better on the XBox. That's a fact Jack.I never had it like this where I grew up. Gta looks way more than a bit better as I have both versions -
In the cross platform games it really matters more what platform they originally made it for and which platform it was ported to after the fact, the port is likely to be the one that looks worse. I've never seen gta4 on ps3, but it certainly doesn't look bad on the 360.

I like 360 a lot better after owning both for a long time. I prefer the Xbox controller and also am a big Halo fan so it depends on what games you play. I much prefer the Xbox live network and it's a lot less prone to server issues, but the Ps3 network is free. Other than that it's all up to personal preference honestly.

couldn't pull the trigger, came home empty handed. started thinking that if I was going to spend $300 plus dollars I might as well get the new OPPO I want. I will probably get more enjoyment in the long run from it. But it is only wednesday lol.Speakers:

It really does come down to selection of exclusive games and the controller. Yes you can get an adapter to change controllers between systems, but they're all workarounds and not one I've tried (even the new Cronus) works perfectly. -

I love my PS3 but, I do wish the controller was bigger like that of the XBOX360. My hands are no longer the same size as when I was 10.

John Megadeth wrote: »Why on earth would you own both versions?
I bought the xbox version to play with my brothers and the ps3 version to play on campaign mode. The campaign mode is really superior on the ps3 even though they lowered the resolution on the ps3 they used oil colors and have far better light source, shading and the motion on a fast bike just blends in all together like liquid with a high frame rate. Just take a cab ride on the ps3 and you can see how awesome it is compared to the really bland xbox version. The ps3 is a far superior machine and looking at a you tube vid or some bias web site showing you fake side by side vids and screen shots does not tell the whole story -

"but the Ps3 network is free". To me one of the bigger differences. And I agree with Assimilated from what I've read and seen between the two, some games look better on x-box and some better on PS3._____________________________________________________________________________________________

So any news on the ps4 or a new Xbox console? Can't believe nothing new in 8 years.

I like and support the ps3, most online gaming is free with it. I know for x-box it's only 50 or 60 a year, and that's not much, but it's the point...
-
I own both as well. I've always been a Playstation owner and never owned an Xbox. For that reason, I prefer the ps3 controller. Otherwise I will say the audio/visuals are better on the ps3 for CoD (the only game I own on both) but the servers for online play are far superior on Xbox; as they should be if you're paying for it! Ps3 network is free and you get what you pay for. A glitchy server. So it comes down to games. You like race games. Well Forza is pretty cool, for a Gran Turismo knock off. Haha. GT all the way toxis lol, I would like to see the xbox try tackle a game like that. Another unimportant factor for the op would be the Netflix performance of the ps3. I find the xbox to be horrid in picture quality compaired to the ps3 implementation when I have done side by sides. The ps3 black levels provide a more 3 dimensional picture

from what i have read and talked to a few people the PS3 is the way to go for me. The other thing that kills me is the power supply for the xbox ugh. i know petty but i would have to hide that thing some where. on the other side not a fan of the oval top on the PS3. now too find the best deal for a PS3Speakers:

Not to be the voice of dissent here, but... at this point in the console cycle and assuming you already have a PC, I would just game on your PC until the next-gen consoles come out later this year. If you're itching to spend money, you'd probably get more general benefit out of upgrades to your PC than you would coming in this late in the console cycle (and there's a lot of fun to be had with a Steam account). That is, of course, unless you're also looking to pick up a Blu-ray player, in which case the PS3 is a no-brainer. The 360, by and large, gets the better version of the multiplatform games because of how similar the architecture is to PC, which is why most of the cross-platform companies like EA use 360 as the lead console platform so they can leverage a PC port to reduce their risk of losing money. Even GTA4, which polkfarmboy cited as looking better on PS3, actually runs at 1280x720 on 360 with anti-aliasing but only 1152x640 on PS3 with NO anti-aliasing. The PS3 also runs GTA4 at a lower average framerate, even with the decreased resolution. However, thanks to PS3's post-processing, you may still prefer the look of that game on PS3, as polkfarmboy does.
Personally, I stick with 360 because of Sony's insistence on keeping that tiny controller as the standard, whereas the 360's controller fits my hands well (and has the superior online play and cross-game chat, which is irrelevant to you). As I said, however, if you're looking to play Blu-rays on a near-reference player AND do some occasional gaming, the PS3 is a no-brainer. But if you already have a fairly recent PC and are looking for casual gaming, I'd say upgrade your video card and buy a wired 360 controller to use on your PC. You'd get more general advantage out of that than you would buying either console this late in the game.Equipment list:

I'd lean towards the PS3 right now if I had to buy one of those 2 consoles. If you get the itch for the latest and greatest consoles at year end/ early next year, you can always dedicate the PS3 to blu ray player duties in another room. Graphically, they're very similar, and I am honestly comfortable with either controller.
I still enjoy gaming on my PS3. I also like the fact that online gaming is free, as I use it so rarely, I can't justify paying for it each year.2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

As a severely pro-PS3 person, easy with the "near reference" comment on the BD player. It's no better than a standard $100 BD now days. I just added a Sony 790 BD player to my theater and it stomps the PS3 like a red headed step child, and is only $250 full retail. I can imagine what a real reference player would look like.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

Come again,
PFB I disagree completley, the Spec sheet on the ps3 hardware may be better, but developers have a easier time intergrating their products with the Xbox and it shows! More recent PS3 games have caught up, but PS3 definetley does not have a advatage in what you mentioned. Hardware is one thing but coding is another, early on the XBOX had a huge advatage. The PS3 has leveled the field some recently but the winner in both of what you mentioned goes to the XBOX 360 hands down.
