If you've got some Zappa or Mothers of Invention stuff.............CRANK IT today. 10 years ago on this date, I went into mourning. My office is suffering as I post.
If you don't have any Mothers, play anything. But listen to the music today. It would've put a smile on his face.
That is all.

I play some form of Zappa at least 3 times a week anyway...
Big Swifty from Waka Jawaka is playing as i type this -
Excellent choice. Minimum social commentary, and maximum awesome music on that album. Plus, Aynsley Dunbar on drums. It doesn't get much better than that.

Is 115dB at 10:30 on the dial ok?Political Correctness'.........defined

I agree George! Zappa is really missed. Im listening to Mothers at the Fillmore, after Overnight Sensation, and will close the evening with The muffin man....great Bozzio drumming!

Ok, so 2 shots of whiskey, right?
1 in me, 1 in the ground for Frank?
Though I'm not a huge fan (underexposed might be a better term), I can respect one thing, he impacted more than few people with his music, obviously.
Cheerio guys, here's to Frank, here's to music, here's to our love of audio and all that it implies.
Cheers,

As Frank would say turn all the knobs to the right.
I always wonder what Frank would say regarding the present political BS.
Has anyone listened to the DVD DTS recording of Holloween in NY.
Its on my list of gifts.

He used to introduce Dunbar as "my two new drummers". As opposed to some of the later drummers, Dunbar played a very basic set of drums. One bass drum, snare, one mounted tom-tom, and two floor toms. What he could do with that set-up had to be heard to be believed. It's unfortunate that Zappa wasn't using Barcus-Berry pick-ups to amplify his percussionists in the early days. They were miked. This never translated well on the live albums. I was at both nights of the "Fillmore East" album (the late shows), and most of the real "finesse" stuff was lost on tape.
The later drummers were technically proficient, but seemed to lack a certain "taste" for lack of a better term. Aside from Buddy Rich, who was not human and doesn't count, Dunbar was the first super-drummer. I was always much less than impressed with the technical whizzes who drummed for Yes, ELP, Rush, and those sort of bands. No "soul" in that playing.
Other stand-out Mothers drummers in my opinion would have been Art Tripp, Ralph Humphrey, and Chester Thompson, with an emphasis on Art Tripp.
As far as his comments regarding our present political nightmare, I'm sure you have a pretty good idea already as to what they would've been.

Mr Grand
I'm glad to see that you have been to many Zappa concerts. They were all different. I would try to go all the New England concerts in Boston, Conn, RI, etc when Zappa did his concert tours. Great stories to tell. I contributed my girl friends used underware on stage for the making of the quit. I even went to the early and late shows on the same night. Better audience at the late show. The concerts were always completely different from last even on the same night. I wish I had been to the NY Holloween concert, I understand it lasted 4 hours. Zappa wouls usually light a cigarette and play 4 or 6 tunes without any interruption in the music, just quickly segway into the next tune. Your head would be reeling. It was like you were hypnotized by his guitar solos. Every performer today does the same old act every night. Did you ever hear the Zappa interview by Terry Gross on FM? He explains why performers are phoney if you perform the same love song 10,000 times. Thanks for the thread, it brings back great memories.
I have VHS tapes of Zappa, "Bub Room Special"and many others. Anyone want a copy let me know. $5.00 each.
And please lets have a good DVD DTS recording of 200 Motels. All VHS and Laser disks suck sonically.

"Of course we'll play Petrouchka tonight! Of course we'll send the penguin through the flaming hoop tonight!"
"Boys and girls, welcome to the desecration of Carnegie Hall!"
That same night, after being called back for another encore at Carnegie Hall he said..........
"The management here at Carnegie Hall says if I want to use this stage past midnight, I have to pay $600 extra." (At this point, people started putting their coats on). "Well I'll tell you something boys and girls, I'd be HAPPY to pay $600 to play some more for you! Now this next song is dedicated to the pr!ck in the back who's counting the overtime money!" (Then they played "The Mudshark")1971, right after The Live at the Fillmore East concerts.
"Do you want to hear organized madness, or dis-organized madness?" That one was the opening statement at Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum in 1973, where I saw the "Grand Wazoo" band two nights in a row. The first night he had an opening act. We booed them off the stage before they completed one song. Who might that have been? None other than "The Bob Seeger System". The next night, there was no opening act. I imagine the supremely untalented Mr. Seeger eventually got the last laugh. "OOOOO like a rock!"
The only warm-up band that I can remember making it through their whole set, was at the Carnegie Hall concert. The Persuasions, a fantastic accapella group. The old Carnegie Hall acoustics and the performances that night by BOTH The Persuasions and the Mothers, are permanently etched in this head.
Man, I could go on forever here, but it wouldn't be sporting. FRANKO, thanks for the memories!!

Bike, I didn't answer your question. Nope, never heard the Terry Gross interview. I loved his response at the Senate hearings regarding labels on albums...........
"I wrote and played a song about dental floss. Did dental hygiene in this country improve as a result? People have been playing love songs for centuries. Does everybody LOVE one another?" -

I love Zappa! I was listening to Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation during my house warming party at the time he passed away. Spooky.
I was testing a new (to me) integrated on the anniversary of his passing. I was using Hot Rats for the demo. The thing is, I forgot it was the anniversary. Spooky.Make it Funky! -
I worship at the altar of Zappa, and I love Doro.
I also know that you need to be blessed with a great many HUMAN attributes in order to appreciate Zappa, his quotes, and his music.

If you send me some Zappa, I will listen from start to finish. I can only claim ignorance at this point.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I believe there is only one "M" in humus, and I will send you some Zappa someday, if I can stop laughing long enough to do it.
Lunatic. Keep 'em coming!
You going to want the purely instrumental bliss, or the stuff with trendy lyrics and curses that make the kids buy the NEXT album and attend the concerts? I recommend the instrumental (I'll even make it one of the ones you can tap your feet in time to), that went to number one in Europe around 1969-1970, and never made it to number 99 in the U.S. This sadly demonstrates the musical state of affairs in this country. If it doesn't have lyrics, it ain't going anywhere. Can you spell "NO ATTENTION SPAN?" No wonder classical is going down "Le Tubes" here.

Peter - Thank you very much for sending me the music, it was really cool. It was nice to put a tune to the name.
George - Peter , a fellow forum user, has enlightened me. He sent me some Zappa, ala Burnt Weenie Sandwich, and I have to say, it is very interesting. I was pretty suprised at how much I liked it. Only one "M"?? Damn you and that magic dictionary
I honestly cannot classify it in any way....it jumps over many genre's of music. Is that essentially a Zappa standard, unclassified?
It reminded me of one of my favorite bands, WEEN. I remember them saying in an interview that they were influenced by Zappa, but it kinda went right by me.
Peter/George/Gidrah - I will continue this Zappa quest with some purchases, any more suggestions?CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
My favorite is probably Hot Rats. It's mostly instrumental.Make it Funky!

Yes Hot Rats, a very, very good CD with Captain Beefheart on vocals on Willie the Pimp
The new DTS DVD A Halloween with 5.1 is very nice with many guitar solos. "Black Napkins" which ends the show is very special.
I wouldn't recommend the new "Baby Snakes" DVD to start with, because there is very little Zappa guitar playing except for the very end. -
While not a huge Zappa fan myself. I can definately appreciate his appeal and have several of his albums. Among his many talents he could play the guitar as good or better than anyone! I do mean anyone.......I remember the first time I heard the song "Dirty Love" and he goes into the guitar solo. I was in nirvana. That particular set of riffs will knock your socks off !!

Thanks for the tip on "Halloween". I'll have to check it out. I have several albums but no CDs so this would be a good time to pick up one or two. (Like, when isn't a good time? )
